An ominous sign of things to come?

Unfortunately, not all of the things at CES were to brag about. LG showed an upscaling DVD player, and showed a side by side comparison of a 480i DVD image vs a 1080p. As expected, the 1080p picture was smoother looking overall, but the horrendous amount of video noise in the 1080p picture made the 480i image look better overall!

The OLED (Organic LED) display was shown by Toshiba last year and had a bunch of buzz surrounding it. I completely missed it last year and got grief for it from fellow A/V enthusiasts. Therefore, the first booth that I visited this year was Toshiba, but they didn’t show any OLED, indicating to me that it’s not ready for prime time yet. The sales rep at Toshiba wasn’t too interested in talking about why it wasn’t at the show. Sony of course did show OLED, but I missed the display. The best I can therefore do is show the small 2” LG display of OLED. It was VERY impressive looking. I can see even from the 2” screen what the fuss is about.
