HOME THEATER VIDEO & ACCESSORIES
(The Big Picture!)

Here’s a summary of the various home theater related items that I saw. Let’s start with one of the big news items. LG announced their first hybrid HD DVD/Blu Ray player. I had assumed that the player would use two separate laser assemblies for each of the formats, but no, both lasers are combined in one housing.

Apparently the engineering challenge was to overcome the fact that BluRay and HD DVD have their information at different depths within the discs, so two separate alignments had to be used, one for each format. The player is available in both a computer and standalone format.

LG had a massive booth at the show, displaying many items. The hybrid player is called the LG Super Multi Blue player. Not too catchy a title, but it sure got attention.

LG displayed a multitude of large flat screen TVs, each touting special features for a better image. Overall the LG displays were very good looking. Want to build a plasma right into the wall. Here’s one that comes with a wood frame. (I wonder if the instructions mention the need for massive air flow behind the wall due to the heat generated by the plasmas?)
