Message from Curt

Here’s another list of projectors. I’ve got a lot of new sets in for this listing, the website has been updated and there are many high end 9” sets here.

Just a couple of notes regarding emails that I get in daily:

  1. I have a forum that apparently a number of you are not seeing on my site. It’s now a relatively large discussion group of nearly 2000 members to chat about all things CRT, HDMI/DVI, and home theater related. Feel free to join, there’s no charge, and we don’t sell your email address to anyone. See http://forum.curtpalme.com

  2. Also important, I do not personally have any involvement in the selling of the third party "Marketplace" items such as the HDfury or Moome cards that are listed in these mailouts and on the site. We include them as a service to our visitors as the items are things that CRT and home theater enthusiasts are interested in. While I have used a few of these products, the forum and emailing the vendors directly is the best way to get quick answers to your questions. The forum is chock full of useful information as many buyers of these products compare notes and give application hints and tips.

New Projectors and other goodies

(1) NEC GP 3000: I’ve got one good working excellent example of the pre- PG series of NEC sets. Tubes in excellent shape, setup remote included.  This is a full data grade set, capable of up to 720p. 600 lumens, EM focusing tubes. $250.00

(14) Barco Retro 808s projectors: These are CRT projector chassis that were used in rear projection video cubes. These were all used in the same place, and all have about 3000 hours on them. No visible wear on the MEC tubes (retro sets all used the rebuildable MEC tubes, not the Sony ones), with special short throw lenses that will shoot about a 50” wide image maximum. I’m selling these for far less than I normally would, $750 per set. At this price you can convert a front projection Barco 808 set to LC (you’ll need to source lenses that will give a larger image), or buy these sets as spare parts for an existing unit that you might already have, or buy these for the tubes, which can be dismantled out of the LC housings and installed into standard FP mounts. Your choice. I will be picking these up next week, they are currently in Seattle, and I will most likely be scrapping a few of them for parts and for the tubes. There are some pictures of these sets here.

(1) Runco 991 Ultra projector: This is the same projector as an NEC XG 110, but with HD8 lenses that are color filtered, and Runco added continuous Scheimpflug adjustments for corner focusing. In addition, there’s a screen trigger output for electric screens and the case is black instead of white. This set has low hours on it and I’ve replaced the green tube with a brand new original NEC tube. This set is in excellent condition, and is a great intermediate set. 1080p ready. $2500.00

(8) Barco 1209s: These are late model high end 9” sets that came out of a flight simulator at the Johnson space center. I’ve taken out the custom circuitry and converted several of these to flat screen use as I’ve done many times in the past. The sets are in excellent shape chassis and case-wise.  As with most flight simulator projectors, 7 of these have strange wear patterns on the faces of the tubes. Most cannot be used for home theater use as is, and will need the G and B tubes replaced. The reds are fine and show no wear. One of these sets shows no wear at all, and while I suspect that the tubes were changed in this machine shortly before I received it, it may be that this set was a spare and was left in standby mode for most of it’s life. All of these sets have the improved electronics and video boards over the older plain 1209 projectors. Included with each set priced below is a remote control programmed with all of the Barco codes. 1200 lumens, 135 Khz scan rate, etc. Barco’s equivalent to the Marquee 9500 Ultra, Sony G90, etc. Sharper LUG tubes come stock with these sets, July 2000 build date,  very late model sets.  IRIS 3 cameras are installed in these sets as well. Optional convergence on green control module is also installed.

I also received the sets below with no lenses on them, so I am offering these sets at several price levels depending on how much work you want to do yourself. The tubes for these sets are readily available, and good condition lenses are often offered on eBay and on my website forum for sale area. Shipping these sets without lenses will save on shipping costs, as the sets are about 60 lbs lighter that way. The pricing is as follows:

  • Barco 1209s as is, left set for curved screen use, good red tube, bad G and B tubes, no lenses  $2200.00

  • Barco 1209s as is but with convergence boards set for flat screen use. Good red tube, bad G and B, no lenses $2700.00

  • Barco 1209s, no wear on tubes, set for flat screen use, add lenses, you’re ready to go!  $5500.00

  • Barco 1209s, new G and B tubes installed, original red with no wear $7200.00

I have a number of different 9” lenses in stock, the pricing ranges from $300-800 per set depending on your needs and screen size.

(1) Runco 1100: This is based on the same Barco 1209s chassis as the SEOS units above, but this set has red and green colored C elements installed. 6200 hours on the chassis. Very light 16:9 wear on the green tube only, the R and B are fine. Convergence on green module installed, IRIS 3 installed. A black case with some minor scuff marks on it, a simple shot of spray paint will clean it up, or I can get that done locally at a paint shop for $200.00. The set is completely useable as is, or I can install a new green tube in it. Detailed information and pictures of this set are here. Comes with GT17 lenses at minimum, but they could also be HFQ900 lenses. Runco takes the sticker off the lenses, so I don’t know exactly what model they are, but they are a higher resolution lens than the older HD 10 ones.  $5500.00 as is, $7000.00 with a new green tube installed.

(1) Marquee 9500 Ultra: This is another late model (January of 2000) top of the line 9” set. From the low G2 values on these tubes, it looks like they are the second set of tubes that were installed in this set, as there is no wear on the R and B, but the green is brand new due to some text wear in the middle of the tube. The case is in mint shape, no scratches at all. The second RGB input module is installed in this set, or you can choose to remove it and install an HDMI or DVI Moome card. Excellent working shape, there’s not much more to say about this set. $7500.00 incl new (not rebuilt!) green tube.

(1) Runco 4404 Ultra video processor: This was a $20,000 processor from Runco back in 2001. It came in with the Runco 1100 above. This scaler will output up to 1080p from any video, Svideo or 480i component source. Excellent scaling capabilities, the unit is in great shape. The manual is downloadable from www.runco.com in their product archive section. A steal at $550.00.

Incoming!

Sony G90: Unknown condition.

Marquee 9500 Ultra: Unknown condition.

Barco G808s: This set is here and has great tubes (sharper Sony tubes) that are really hard to find at this point. Unknown non tube issues with this set.

Barco Data 708: great tubes, unknown condition otherwise.

NEC 6PG+: Great tubes, unknown condition otherwise

DWIN 700: Great tubes, power supply issues. Remote and ceiling bracket included.

(4) Ampro 4600: Not sure of the condition of these yet, at least one will be parted out. They should be here sometime in early December.

(2) Barco Data 701s: One has all new tubes, one has original tubes in great shape. Priced to move.

A/V Blowout

Continue to check eBay under my seller ID ‘audiovideotechnician’ for older CRT parts that I am blowing out, along with specials and stuff that I’m listing there on a weekly basis. Right now I am blowing out my last three (2 new and one demo) AA 9A65 basic transcoders that I used to sell for $175. I am selling the last ones I have at $100, below my cost. They are good basic transcoders that work well, the more expensive AA 1365 transcoder/scalers is what I’m stocking now. The pricelist has been adjusted to reflect the lowered value of the USD, so the Canadian pricing has come down some.

Xbox360 Repairs

Xbox360 repairs are turning out to come in fast and furious. I’ve repaired about 30 machines so far, and I’m getting in 2-3 a week. A common problem with these also seem to be sticking DVD trays. I’m working on a fix for this as well, and will post as soon as I’ve nailed it.

As is well documented on the internet, the Xbox 360 consoles have been plagued with the ‘red ring of death’ failure. This causes the machine to shut down completely, and the power/diagnostic LEDs on the front of the 360 console turn red.

To be perfectly upfront, Microsoft is repairing these under warranty, and on July 5, 2007 announced that the red ring of death problem will be covered for 3 years from the date of purchase, and they will repair this problem/partial design flaw. So why am I offering the repair as well, you might ask? Well, as it turns out, the turnaround time for Microsoft can be anywhere from 3-8 weeks depending on the repairs required. In addition, if your Xbox 360 has been opened already and the Microsoft tamperproof sticker has been removed or altered, Microsoft will not even look at your machine! So for those that have hacked into the unit, Microsoft will not repair these machines, period. I’ve also heard that at least some of the returned consoles that were repaired under warranty have failed again shortly after being received from being repaired at Microsoft.

I therefore offer the following:

  • I will repair the red ring of death problem for $80.00 USD (Canadian at par!) if you pick up and drop off at my shop, or $99.00 USD/CAD incl return shipping if you ship it in.
  • Turnaround time is typically 2 business days, including me running your unit for 12 hours after I repair it to make sure the repair is solid. I’ve repaired about 12 of these machines so far, and all are working fine.
  • All I need is the console itself. I don't need the power supply, games, controllers or hard drive.

Note that I cannot repair other Xbox 360 faults at this point such as intermittent reading of discs, bad power supplies, controllers, etc, but I perhaps will in the future. Send me an email if you want to send your Xbox 360 in for repair. If you're shipping it to me, make sure to follow these instructions.

Reel to reel tape recorders

I’ve been ramping up my repairs once again on reel to reel tape recorders, as I was repairing and refurbing these long before I got into CRT projectors. I’ve just purchased a rare Akai GX 747 unit that should be here shortly, as well as the below:

Revox B77. A high end 3 ¾, 7 ½ IPS 10 ½” machine Fully tested and aligned, frequency response to 20Khz as per my Nakamichi analyzer. All functions are flawless on the unit. Included are the rare rack ears (removable) in case you want to want to bolt this into a rack. Not listed on eBay yet, but I will this week. $400.00.

I have others that I’m working on, keep checking my eBay listings.

Thanks for your support!
