Guys,
I've got distracting "jail bar" banding at high scan rates on my BG1209s.
I've tried raster shift etc etc, but still having no joy.
I'm resigned to the fact I need to adjust the porch settings of my sources. What's a cheapish method of acheiving this? Ultimately 1080p @ 72 and adjustible gamma out of a VP50pro would be sweet, but well out of my budget. A HTPC might be an option but am not a fan of a PC in the theatre.....
Any sugestions, Thanks
Dan

Dan,
I just picked up a VP50 for $575 off Ebay. I had previously bought g90 lenses, Frankenyokes, & 9" tubes for my 8500 which I have not installed yet.
I debated hard on the lummie HDQ with 11 points of gamma or the VP50 with less gamma control, but Hdmi and 72 hz.
BDPS550>direct 24Hz 4:22 Hdmi>Dennon3808ci>direct 24Hz 4:22Hdmi>Vp50>72Hz 4:22 Hdmi>Moome card with Gamma and MP mods installed. Now running 1920x1080/817/800 @ 72hz on my 8500 and have scan lines that I can see from my seating position on white scenes. I had slight jailbars on the left side without the processor and absolutely none now. I used Gino's settings for the processor for 1920 x 1080 and modified porches slightly. Processor has the latest update Jan 09 v1.9 I think. It also allowed me to take out most if not all of the blue hump, but I am not going to calibrate until I throw in the 9" tubes. It made a huge difference to colours at low IRE. I believe the VP50 and pro both top out at 165 mhz, I'm at 163.5 for 1080 and 122 for 800.

Putting in the processor has taken away all motivation to install the 9" tubes.
For about a month.........
I don't think people emphasize enough the importance of a processor.

Hmm, why is it that my custom settings on my VP50Pro are drastically different than yours? My H-Front is something like 329, and my H-Back is like 118. I'm running Long Retrace. Is it because we aren't using the same projector (8500 vs 9500)? Just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.
I never mess with Sync? Should I? Not sure what it does.

Thanks for the reply Jim unfortunately the Vp50 goes for double that price in Australia. I was happy with my old DVDO iScanHD+ mated to my G70...but now with the BG1209s and 1080p i'm seeing issues with my sources, that only a high end VP can deal with.....(it seems).

Those settings are Gino's, used with his two 9500's blended. I used the same settings, and altered the porches slightly, and yes I am using short retrace (not sure about Gino ). If you are using blu ray and long retrace, I suggest you pause in the middle of a movie somewhere and switch to short retrace ( observe the 20-25% of the image you are missing ). The problem with short retrace is that on some projectors you end up with jailbars on the left side of the image on bright scenes. I took great care setting up my projector (before getting the VP) to set the raster over the side of the tube face on the side with the jailbars and then have the image set in 1/8" from both sides. Before the processor I had very slight jailbars on the left side of the image. I now have no sign of jailbars what so ever. I only got the processor last Friday so I am sure there are lots of things left to learn, but the image is improved in all areas.
Also take note that I have an MP moddified 03 Vim and neck cards, so your mileage may vary.
I also found this thread very helpfull in making my decision.

Cheapish is a relative term.....
I feel your pain as I live in Canada . That $575 processor was around $800 landed, but shipping was only about $40.
I have gone the htpc route in the past, and might again when 7.1 bitstream over hdmi is reasonably priced ( I am aware of the Asus and Auzen cards ). Htpc's always seem to be work what with updating drivers etc. With the time I spent F--king with it I could have bought two processors. If I build another one it will be a secondary source only, not worth the with a theater full of people.

I'm not missing any part of my image. Long retrace with BluRay does, by default, cut off a significant portion of the image, but that's why my porch settings are so huge - I had to shift the image back into view. And with short retrace, the porch settings are still fairly large because I'm trying to shift the image to avoid the jail bars. I've not yet messed with the rasters but I'm not sure I need to with long retrace (?).
I guess the real question is, once you have a VP to help get rid of jail bars, which retrace setting is the preferred option: long or short? I thought it was the former but I'm not really sure why.
