About to start over converging the 4600 and noticed that even with horizontal shift and phase at max, the image is still significantly shifted to the left when looking at the tube face. Right and left size, lin, and edge are all set at 50%. When horizontal shift and phase are also at 50% the image is WAY leftward. Does this mean I have to play with the centering magnets? If so, 1) how do I go about doing this? and 2) will adjusting centering magnets affect the astig?

Guy Kuo states that the magnets are a pair of rings with small tab handles behind the deflection yoke. I only find one plastic ring (with four tab handles, at 90, 180, 270, and 360 degrees), and it appears to be a threaded lock ring of some sort. There does not appear to be a second ring.

Any suggestions?

1: What do you have on the screen, internal test pattern, external source. what?
2: Check your blanking to make sure your not just blanking that part of the screen.

There aren't any centering magnets. Those four tabs you describe sound llike the ones on the lock ring on the front of the focus magnet. There are some rings behind the focus magnet. One is for BEAM centering which is a focus adjustment and the other is the stig magnet.

macgyver: i'm using an external test patten (avia). the blanking controls are all wide open. the whole test patten is visible, it's just way off center.

tse: no centering magnets? that was my last hope! so is there no way to fix this?

has anyone ever experienced this problem before or have any ideas as to what could be causing it?

You must be trying to set up 1080P? There have been many posts about this. There are no centering magnets for a X600 projector. However, not all X600 projectors have this problem. Some can do 1080P with the raster centered and some not. Even the ones that can do it require close to full right shift to do it. I am working on a mod to resolve this but as mine is able to center 1080P and my time is limited, I haven't finished it up. The mod that I'm doing is not for the novice as it requires pulling the tubes, removing all the magnetics and modding the front coil. Until I finish mine or someone else comes up with a better solution, you should stick with 1080I. There is also a issue with some X600 chassis that won't center the 1080P image within the raster. Scott has posted a fix for that. That fix requires the replacement of a capacitor to a different value on a circuit board. That also should not be done by a novice. Only you know your abilities so it's at your own risk. Use the search funtion on this forum and you will find all the info needed to answer your questions.

So then, are the internal test patterns ok and fill the whole screen? If so then its probably what Chip is describing. If your not familiar with your projector you shouldn't be starting out at 1080p even if your projector could resolve it. Try the internal patterns and post back.

Ok several updates (and I apologize for not having a more complete first post):

The internal test patterns are all centered. MOREOVER, when I light up the raster (contrast down and brightness full up), it too can be centered. It is the image itself that cannot be centered within the raster. So the nonexistent centering magnets are irrelevant (sorry i even brought them up).

Second, the Avia internal test pattern I was using was being played in a Toshiba HD-A3 HDDVD player at 1080i, not 1080p (the player does not do 1080p). I checked with other resolutions on the same player, and I am getting the same problem with 720p, but not 480i or 480p.

Ok now I feel like a fool. I just went down and opened the 'setup' menu of the player, changed the 'TV shape' option from 16:9 to 4:3, and problem solved! Thank you all for your help, and I'm sorry for being so green with all this stuff.

And I will keep in mind the potential problem with 1080p when and if I get Blu-ray. Does anyone have experience with 1080p on the 4600? Assuming it will center, is it a substantial improvement? Is it resolvable?
