Hi,
I know there is another thread about DVE but I thought this subject deserved it's own thread.
I've been watching the new DVE HD Basics disc and the narrator in the tutorials goes on and on forever about the greatness of CRT based monitors.
He mentions at one point there was a display device that let you see the potential of HD and that was CRT.
In the test patterns they remind you again and again the goal is to try to get your display to behave like a CRT.
They often refer to the studios in which content is created and picture quality established via CRT.
It's perhaps self serving but it's just music to my ears. I may watch it again just to bask in the glory of truth it represents.
How lucky we are to know CRT based displays... long live CRT!

Well, this person wasn't happy:
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000V6LST0/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Seems to suggest that this "easy to use" is not much better in navigation than the "classic" and original HD DVD version. Plus, he seems to suggest that you have some of Joe Kane's arrogance thrown in for good measure that you didn't have to tolerate before!
Wish they would have done a blu version of the orginal HD DVD version (with the audio fixed).

Quoted from that review "And the paper holder itself is a tool to check the grayscale. AWSOME INCLUSION! "
....? I don't think that fella knows what he's doing.
He whines about not having a pattern to adjust Hue but that should be required for any type of HD signal.
Anyway,.. I'm loving DVD HD Basics. Well worth it if you ask me.

Hey,
One thing I like about this new version of DVE is the resolution checking patterns.
I guess part of the reason I like them is at 1080p everything looks clean and resolved on my G70!!
I guess that's why every time I dumped back to 1080i for a while thinking that was the "proper" limitation of the pj the occasional scan lines that I would spot lead me back to 1080p. (They would give it a "video" type of look rather then looking film like which is part of the attraction of progressive scan anyway.)
Anyway,.. I'm stunned a bit by this. I figured my Pj wasn't fully resolving 1080p but it still looked sharp and good so I went with it. But,.. these test patterns seem to indicate it does resolve all the info at 1080p and I can't wait to spend more time with this disc and try to get even more out of my pj. (I'm sure I can still get more from Grey Scale, Uniformity, Geometry, and Convergence.)

Test patterns at 1080p are one thing, but moot if movies themselves look soft. How do they look at 1080p? If they look good, awesome!! I have read in several places of G70s successfully running 1080p
