An MCI broadcast deck, 10.5", 1/2 track (I think). Heads are good, the unit has some servo problem with the capstan motor. THe capstan motor is that big round 10 lb thingie on the right side of the chassis. The chassis flips up as shown to reveal/service the electronics. Check out that power supply!!!

A whopping $100 find on Craigslist! And the best part: This beast runs 7 1/2, 15 AND....30 IPS!

I'll dive into it this weekend! Mr. Green

How much recording time do you get with a 10 1/2" reel at 30 IPS? Probably this is pretty heavy duty thing but it sure isn't very pretty.

So is this like the Marquee 9500 of reel to reel recorders? Or more like an 8500?

From a radio station point, this is a 9500. I think. You're right, not pretty, but with a 10 lb capstan motor.. damnnnn!

I think it's beautiful, in it's own way. Like a Sony VO9850 is beautiful. Or a Hummer H1.

It is cool, but do you mean from a collectors point of view? Technically would it really sound better then something like this?

Oh purge ye these digital thoughts from this thread!!

The s/n won't be close to the digital recorder, but a tiny hard drive spinning can't come close to metal 10 1/2" reels ripping around at 15 or 30 IPS.

that looks looks of like one of the high speed duplicators they used to bulk record cassette tapes.
I worked on them for one summer while between jobs.
I re-engineered it to run at 80times speed.

Interesting.... I think I have a few headblocks for those somewhere. We scrapped a bunch of decks recently. No, they were not worth selling.

My Studer A810 records at 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 ips! I got lucky with that 4 speed option.

Speaking of beauty, I went through an Otari MX-55 for someone. No looker, but damn, it records nice!

Oh, BTW, Curt... I can get the NAB adaptors for that machine.

Back in my tv repair days in the late 70's early 80's we did some buying and selling of Hifi gear, I remember moving several Dynaco items. I could never figure out the attraction. I see there is still a market.

I'm sitting on one each of those, plus the matching FM tube tuner. Check out the 2 channel forum at forums.klipsch.com for some serious analog guys...

I use a Ming-Da MC-34B Tube amp with EL34's in it. It amazes me how sweet it sounds. I had to have at least ONE tube-amp.

It's a GREAT sleeper amp. I was tired of the outrageous prices everyone wanted for a Dyna 70 in trashed condition.

It's a Ming-Da amp when it works.

It turns into a Da-M(n)ing amp when it fries.

Yes, some of the models were prone to overheating the transformers. Mine is updated. Been running 2 years no issues at all.

I figure by the time I get f*ck*** over on ebay for a Dyna 70 AND throw ANOTHER $300 or more into actually making it work right again, the Ming was a decent deal. Toss out the 6L6's, put in a good set of EL34's and re-bias, and you are golden.

Seriously, not bad for $400. (Got it on sale) There is room for tweaks and improvements, but it makes me tingle when I play some good jazz or Diana Krall through it.

Anyway....
