|
|
I just purchased a refurb Dwin 700. I bought this particular model because it is supposed;y silent. It is not silent. Aside from a mysterious electrical crackling sound emitted by the tubes, there is also a fan in the belly of the prjector. The fan is more quite than most CRT projectors but it is definitely audbile. The longer the projector is on, the more noise the fan starts to make -- a very low grinding sound, although it doesn't sound broken or anything like that. What would happen if I removed the fan completely? I know it would shorten the lifespan of the projector, but by how much? The older Dwin 500 does not have any fan at all. I thought maybe the Dwin 700 doesn't need them either. I would rather the projector be completely silent even if it meant several years off its life expectancy. However, if removing the fan would result in the projector's quick demise, then I won't do it.
Thanks
Bruce

Agreed. I've had an HD700. The fan was close enough to silent to be effectively inaudible, unless you stuck your ear right next to it. (Not my normal viewing position. ) You need a new fan. I wouldn't remove it entirely.
The crackle, however, is normal for most HV gear. It's very quiet and I never found it objectionable -- or even noticeable most of the time.

Thanks for the replies. How hard it is to replace the fan? Is it easily accessible? Can I do it myself?
Also if it's normal for most HV gear to make the crackling sound, how come my previous Sony and Harmon Kardon projectors did also make the sound?
Thanks

There probably wasn't bacon on them. The Dwin comes with bacon, which will tend to make that sound. It only has 7" strips of bacon, though - you'll want to upgrade to 8 or 9" bacon at some point.
...In all seriousness, it depends on the environment, the kind of PJ, etc. My barco 808s does it, but verrrry faintly; it's louder on startup and then goes away. A lot of CRT monitors do that, too.

Every one of my Sonys has made that crackle at startup, and a little during operation......

My Dwin doesn't just make the crackle sound at start up. It continues even if my projector is on for hours. I was hoping that it's because I have new tubes and over time the sound would lessen. However, after about three weeks of daily use, the sound is still the same.

Do the tubes have the spring-loaded ground straps around them(for lack of knowing the proper term)? These dissipate most of the static charge around the tubes.
Unless there is an HV leak, but that usually sounds like a LOUD pop or a welder, not to mention kills the image on the tubes..

Yes, the tubes do have the spring loaded grounding wires but they still make the crackling or popping sound. I'm hoping that the sound dissipates as the tube get more use. I've never heard a projector make this sound, except for the first few seconds when a projector is turned on. But as I wrote earlier, the Dwin continues to make the sound even after being on for several hours. It's not outrageously loud or anything. I don't hear it most of the time when the television is turned up. But at night, when I watch with the volume low, I can definitely hear the crackling as well as the fan.

I have an HD700 here and it is very close to silent. And it is directly above me. I get some crackling off the tubes once and a while but not more than a minute worth for very 20 hours of use. I would switch out your fan as its probably bad.
