I'm fairly sure I've solved all of my (power related) protection issues with the recent installation of a giant APC "Smart UPS" in my rack for my home theater and automation system. This UPS not only takes over in the event of a power outtage, it senses above and below user definable voltage parameters with features called "Smart boost and Smart trim" to protect it both ways. Through RS232 connections, it communicates with my Crestron system and triggers a safe shut-down of my whole system, including the projector if power is not restored within a user definable period (I chose 5 minutes). The UPS will hold everything in standby until the batteries are down to 15% or the power is restored. At 15% the UPS shuts down. When power is restored, the UPS comes back to life and the rack goes back to standby status. All user screens on the touch panel have a indicator telling you if you are on back-up power or on-line. You could be in the theater, have up to a 5 minute power outtage and not even know it. However the phone, cable and ethernet lines have no protection. Who makes a device that will handle just those issues? Thanks,

If it is a "Smart UPS" that you have, APC provides software for free (Power Chute) that you can install on a PC to protect it. It won't shut down other devices. Crestron automation systems has a module that I was able to use in my system along with some additional programming. The module detects that the UPS is on battery back-up and creates a simulated led on my touch panel. I took that signal, added some additional programming to to begin a event. When my additional programming detects that signal, it waits 5 minutes and presses the master power off button on my touch panel. The master power off button shuts off all the equipment in my rack system. Simple My solution is only of use to someone with a Crestron automation system. I probably should not have used the term "stand-by" as the whole home theater is now safely in the off condition.

Cylix makes the sort of dedicated communication line protection you're asking about, which I reference only because I have used (not purchased -- it was in a work environment) their stuff before, but so does APC and probably Triplite and the rest of the usual suspects.

Maybe you are trying to make this too difficult, though? How about just getting a power strip with phone, ethernet and coax ports, then running your comm lines through that?
~$30 and you're done. Plug it in to an outlet for grounding and don't use the outlets on the strip if you prefer not, you're still at least $50 ahead of where you'd be if you buy separate solutions for phone, catv and ethernet.
*shrug* Either way, there you go.
