What a weird projector! It's 7" CRT with ILA (Image Light Amplifier) panels, for a 6,000 ANSI lumen rating!!
http://www.jvcdig.com/manuals/370/ICH7SPEC.PDF
It's 20" x 33" x 53" so it's pretty dang big but not as big as it looks. The lenses are on the small side. 380 pounds, though, so you'd want a few strong guys to lift one. The fun spec is 15,525 BTU/hrs each. Two of those running would heat a decent sized house up to uncomfortable temps in the dead of winter. And make your electric bill pretty painful.
It makes me want them, so badly.. ohhh ohhh.. no.

Both, actually. Those are long-throw lenses that make it look a little bigger, but the thing is DEFINITELY a beast at over 400 pounds. It's a Hughes-JVC ILA projector. Xenon-arc light source with CRT's as imagers. Wild technology. There are a few threads about them here and at AVS.
You think WE'RE crazy? Check this out:

And his pics:

The things are about the size and weight of three smaller CRT projectors like 12xx's. THREE.

That guy over on AVS is nuts, he's running it on an 8' screen. That machine would be nice and punchy on a screen twice or three times that size.
But then again some people like to watch with sunglasses on

That projector supports screens up to 357 FEET. 8' would be painful at full brightness. 8)

If I had one of thsoe up an running I think I would play movies on the back of the plaza across the street from me and broadcast the audio over the FM radio. Then I'd drive over and kick back. Instant drive in.

Darn, sorry guys. I even searched for Hughes and I saw the ILA thread but didn't think they were the same thing.
I was impressed as I have never seen a picture of one.
Talk about low WAF.

Back about 1995, the local TV station that upgraded all their equipment put one in. It was used at the news desk to display the video behind the anchors. Noisy unit, but a really nice image.
Someone REALLY should pick these up... I'll bet they don't go for over $100 total. Not bad for a set that was about $120K 13 years ago.

Only a tech would say that...
There's a REASON you've NEVER seen a screen shot from one of these things when they're for sale on ebay, they are without a doubt, the least reliable projector ever slapped together, worse than Ampro's....
I've been looking at them for years, and it is easy to find ones with very low hours because so few of them actually worked long enough to put any hours ON them. Also, the lamps are atrociously expensive and hard to find, and they produce enough heat to warm your entire home during the winter...
They aren't worth $100. . . . . .total.

Until you wrote this I was thinking someone should buy it and set up a drive in or cinema and advertise it as having the best PQ.
"Better quality than those LCD/DLP cinema's they expect you to pay good money to watch a movie in".

Dude, unless you live without electricity at all, are you sure you don't have 220?

The good thing is crazy mofo's like this that keep me out of trouble here at home with my less crazy projects. Thanks crazy snowmobile sized highly dangerous xeon arc 220volt bright as the sun guy. I think I'll add motorized curtains to the screen in the theater this weekend . I'll just show her his photos and say something like, "I'm either going to put up motorized screen curtains or get one of these really bright projectors and rewire the house"
