I'm getting a 1271 today for almost free. I'm curious what the differences are between it and the 2nd gen 1272 that I have already. I think it's just different tubes and horizontal board? Both have 21 point convergence but the 1272 scans higher than the 1271?

The 1271 Has 07MP tubes, A different powersupply, and Hv block, and scans slightly lower then the 1272. The scan difference is no matter though as either machine can only barely resolve 720p, which the 1271 still scans to.

The 07MP tubes are just slightly dimmer, but seem to wear a little slower in the first 3000 hours than the MSP's.

The 1271 will also have the Pt-65 lenses, which focus a little better than HD-8 lenses and would make a nice upgrade for your 1272.

Almost every part is interchangeable. The powersupply can be used in the 1272 if you change the whole thing, HV block and all.

I traded some old computer parts for this 1271... I pulled the cover off and it looks like someone really hacked this thing. The tubes are about 4 or 5, the lens flapping is really whacked... the tubes are set close to stock with some rubber washers and the stock spacers but the lenses are set nearly cross-eyed with screws and locknuts instead of the stock spacer rings. The small fan is gone, the others have been replaced and the sensor wires are shorted to ground. The control panel has been extended about six feet with some telephone cord, I guess they didnt have the other remote. It does have some nice looking pt-65's on it and the cover is in better shape than the one on my 1272. I think I made out okay, since the stuff I traded for it was just junk stripped out of old computers I found in the dumpster. I'll have to find more time to open it up further and see what the rest looks like.

Hmm.. Sounds like they had it set up for a Tiny screen. The grounded sensor wires are because they used the wrong type of fans, defeating the Fan Stop protection. It still has lots of spare boards, though.

The burn looks like they had it opened up all the way side to side and almost all the way top to bottom. Too bad they are so dark. They must have had a very small screen, it looks silly with the lenses cranked so far in.

I'm already taking it apart, so no photos of the way it was but the lenses were cranked so far together that it was impossible to slip a business card between them.

As it turns out the tubes are in better shape than I first thought they were. It took a good cleaning of the faces but the blue looks to be closer to 7 on the scale. The timer says less than 2500 hrs so they must have had it cranked up. I think I'll clean it up, do the mechanical convergence mod, reset the lenses, redo the fans with the zeners and see if I can sell it. I won't have much in it except for some spare time and a few bucks. If I can't sell it I might just have to try a stack.

If you are going to sell it, I would not mod it. Many buyers are weary of user mods. (mostly talking about the zeners)

I noticed that the pt-65's on the 1271 are newer than the ones on my 1272 and they have yellow stickers instead of blue ones. Anyone know of any significant difference between these?
