EngadgetHD has indicated that Oppo will be creating a Blu-ray player:

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/20/oppo-next-to-create-a-new-blu-ray-player/

Oppo's the very highly respected upscaling DVD player maker that seems to hit all the right spots with videophiles, and their products are inexpensive to boot!

If this player turns out to be full featured , inexpensive, and profile 2.0 compliant, they may hit a home run here.

That's awesome news...and expected. But...MORE waiting? Mr. Green I only hope the BD licensing isn't so high they're forced to produce a less-than worthy player. (compared to their previous upconverting SD offerings). I've been wanting an Oppo for a long time now but figured I'd wait until the format mess was cleaned up. I hope they still build in component connectivity...and haven't plugged the hole for hacking it. Rolling Eyes

How does that go when a manufacturer announces a new product? When they announce does that mean it's already designed and ready for production or does it just mean they'll eventually be offering one and are starting design from scratch at the time of the announcement?

Well... to quote from the news article "According to the VP of product development, the company is "very early" in their development cycle, and we should expect more details sometime this summer." They are not saying product will be ready for sale this summer, but that more info will be available. My guess would be, look for product for sale forth quarter, just in time for the holidays.

Yep. They just want to let everyone know that they're working on one, so that hopefully enough people wait to buy it. They don't want you going off and buying something else, like a PS3. (Which IMHO is still the best BD player our there).

Kal, you have to pay everytime you "boot" your Bluray? hehe...I couldn't resist!

BTW I think the spell checker for this forum sofware must have been written by Toshiba. It always suggests Blurry for Bluray.

Edit: Found the secret add a hyphen Blu-ray...That is the correct spelling anyway...my bad.

The same Oppo that's been conning people into thinking upscaling DVD players make DVD quality video near HD quality?
