The APC UPS that I want to install in my equipment rack lists 880 joules with full time multi-pole noise filtering of 0.3% IEEE surge let-through and zero clamping response time. It claims to meet UL 1449 (whatever that is). Does that 880 joule rating sound low or do companies like Monster have inflated specifications with joule ratings in 5 digits?

All it means is that when that joules rating is exceeded, you have to buy another surge protector. It is unlikely that rating will be exceeded.
You best bet is not a point of use device if you only care about surge protection. Your best bet is whole house surge protection that costs about $100.

My second paragraph has the recommendation. 
The only gripe I have against the Brickwall devices is they think you should pay extra because they never fail. So what? You have less than a 1% chance of exceeding the joules rating of an MOV-based device. So, you should pay double just on the VERY RARE chance your MOV-based device has to do its job, then you'll have to buy a replacement MOV-based device? That seems really silly to me. Especially since you are still talking about a point of use device. I don't know about you, but I have computers and 3 rooms with A/V equipment, so spend the money on whole house to protect it all, or 4-8 times as much on point of use devices to protect it all? The choice is pretty obvious.

$300...
Where do you find quality power cords so cheap, the cheapest I've found is $1,500...
But it's worth it, it doubled the resolution of my G70 and made it look better than a G90
