|
|
I just got back from my longest road trip ever. I had been watching an eBay "Buy It Now" add for 2 Sony G-70's (ringing any bells Curt). On the day of the Superbowl I had a friend over, who also wants into this hobby. He drools over my set up...and I know where it falls short. My tubes are burnt bad...and not rebuildable...and at a grand a piece......well, its time to upgrade. At about 6hrs to go on the add I showed it to my friend and asked if he wanted in on half. A few hours later (and a few beers) I asked him again.....of course his girlfriend was there talking him out of it every time I brought it up. So...a few beers later we were sitting at the computer and I showed him the add again (less than 1 hr remaining on the add). He said he wasn't sure......so I clicked the "commit to buy" button and said ....."Screw it,You're going with me!" ....as the add was for PICK UP ONLY ! But...2 G-70's for $600.00 is a hell of deal. Only problem is....they're in New Jersey....and we live in Illinoiz.
The trip there wasn't bad at all, good weather, good company(best friend), and we made great time...926miles in 13.2hours. We loaded up my Monte Carlo...one in the trunk and on in the back seat...and headed home. the trip back was definitely harder, but all in all, I think it will be worth it in the end. TOTAL MILES 1896 HOURS 31.2
If you saw the add then you know that the green and blue tubes have some burn ins on them. IMO... My blue tube is toast and needs replaced (P16LJE0bmb)... My green tube...is useable (but if anyone has 1 for cheap...)..My friends set both are useable, considering this is his FIRST set!
Checking these sets out, I was amazed how clean they are. No dust!! Insides are spotless!!!! Even looking into the lenses...not one spot of dust IN or ON the lenses....AMAZING!!!...even the cases....no cracks or major scratches. Both sets are in great shape....and working!!!...Other than the "NY LIFE" burns in the blue and green tubes they are perfect.
My friend and I both think the trip was worth it, and we haven't even seen what the sets can do yet.
We might be interested in remotes, lense caps, and 1 IR lense cover.
Dave

I saw that auction, too. Those looked like nice machines. That guy really shot himself in the foot (money-wise) going pickup-only. Oh well - better for you! I was surprised somebody in the NYC area didn't snatch them up. At $300/pop, even you if you replace both tubes, you'll have less than $1500 in them. Compared to buying a digital for that price, it's a great deal.
Wow in the back seat of a MONTE?!?!? I would have never guessed you could get it in through the door. That must have been a trick. Did you seat belt it in?
That guy must have thought you were INSANE for driving almost 2000 miles to pick up some old projectors.
Congrats!

Gotta remember that the passenger seat rolls all the way forward in the Monte....that's why I bought it over a 4 door. I wanted to belt it but couldn't get my hand under it to fasten it.......and by the way.....everyone already thinks we're crazy

My buddy and I get that, too. But then, I fire up my system and let people hear and see it. Then the sentiment changes to something more along the lines of, "HOLY sh*t! YOU are the MAN!!!"

I was going to ask the seller if he would consider selling just one. At that price it would have been good just as a parts mule

Well he offered them to me, we had a deal, then I saw them listed on eBay with no shipping, so I walked away.

Cool, I saw those sets too. No way was I going to drive that far though lol. I am interested to see how the burn-in affects the picture quality. I still think $300 a piece is a good deal.

We agreed on $700, which is why it was strange that he listed them right after we agreed on that. No biggie, I've bought two since in better shape.

There might be an ebay auction going now for a set of G70 CRTs. I know some guys here were thinking about bidding on it too though.

Wow Dave - That's quite a haul... I might have passed you on my way from NC to NYC this weekend to pick up a G90. ~1100 miles round trip. Driving home on sunday was a bitch with all of the wind - 40 MPH gusts and all I could think about was getting blown off the road and ruining my new toy.
I'll have 2 G70's ready to sell soon - one that I've been using for the past 2 years and is 100% functional with decent tubes, the other was my "spares" machine - though I never needed it - and is 100% functional with completely toasted tubes. Not sure if eBay is the right way to go, but at least I'm willing to crate and ship...
