|

I was wondering what everyone thought of the tube conditions on this 1031q (August 1988) I'm considering buying as my first projector:
I'm just curious as to what would be the best solution to run my xbox360, hd cable box, etc through the VGA (it has the VGA to the 25 pin that the 1031q supports). I'm more than willing to just use an HTPC, but worried that I could damage the projector with the wrong scan rate. Is there anything that protects against this? Thanks a lot!
EDIT: The lenses are HD6s and the serial is :"5001377" on the outside and on the inside it says "5001412".

If you use a line doubler, it will for sure never go above 480p. However, then you will not be using the full potential of the projector, 1080i or 540p. You will need a scaler that outputs sync on green or negative sync. The CRT's look to be in good shape, however most sony 10xx projectors have good CRTs. I would not pay more than around $100 for it though. For a first projector, it might be a little of a pain, but it is a cheap way to start. A better starter projector would be a Sony 12xx, which is actually what I started on. They are easier to setup and run different sources. Also, a problem with the sony 10xx series, is that the convergence has no memory settings. So if you switch display rez/rates, you will have to manually reconverge every time. That is why using a scaler or line doubler is very useful on a 10xx.

Boyz Toyz 1031q setup guide will also give you some insight to the pj's capabilities. Like Brooklyn said, it is all analog convergence and there is an extensive setup if you decide to change sources. I had a lot of fun learning about CRT projectors on the 1031q and it is a reliable system with a decent picture. I still have it as a backup.
Here is the URL for the setup guide...

Wow! Those tubes look awesome. I would pay up to $150 for that myself if it could be had locally. I see that as a 480p capable projector that is among the smallest, lightest, and quitest CRTs you can find.

i have a 2030q1 sitting the the back room.. tubes look great just like that one.. it caps off at 480p... great little set if i do say so myself.. it has a little video problem now though. so i sold the lenses. i started to unplug all the little cables inside.. i kind of regret it because it would be a good backup if my ECP ever went down.. but i dont know i could remember where all the little wires plug into inside.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think I'll wait for a better HD-Capable projector to replace my CRT HD RPTV.
