|
|
I don't have many HDTV sources (no pay channels), but of what I do have, some of HDNet Movies films are the best I've seen. Certain movies are very sharp, and look better than my HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. I haven't watched many high def movies, so my sample pool is small, and my observations should be taken with a grain of salt. But some HDNet movies look unbelievably sharp. It really kind of looks like it's been processed, almost unnaturally sharp. Even so, I like it! I wish all of my HD sources looked as good.
Am I going crazy, or has anyone else noticed this?

So far the best picture I have noticed is from the concerts on the Rave Channel. Can't wait to get the HD DVD hooked up to compare.

Perhaps its' the very high contrast of a brightly lit arena with darkened seating (background,) but Basketball and Boxing always seem to me to be very good HD sources.

I always get great looking stuff from HDNet. Some of my other movie channels on Verizon are pretty sharp. When I compare the same exact content broadcast to HD DVD, the HD DVD is always better. So yes, there is pretty darn good broadcast content, but on the same content, broadcast has always been inferior or just equal to the HD DVD.

Interesting. I've always been very happy with the picture I get from HDNet and HDNet Movies (in spite of DirecTV), but I've never felt it was in any way superior to the picture I get from HD DVD and BD!
Phil, how do you have your sources all connected to the projector, and what sources are they (I mean models, etc.)?

Movies look great! I cant wait to dvr Lawrence of Arabia..... now if only i could find a way to archive it to a disc.....
Other content like my secret favorite channel UltraHD That channel looks better than disc. Miami swimwear fashion show is worth the price of admission.

D-VHS baby (I hope)!
Which raises the question--The longest tape is about 212 minutes of recording. If they show the 216 minute version, I'll get it all on tape chopping out the credits. If they show the 228 minute version, I'm screwed. Does anyone know the version they are showing?

SC,
I have a Dish HD PVR, an HD-A1 and a PlayStation 3. They all hook up via HDMI to an Octava HDMI switcher, which is connected to a Moome HDMI card in my G70. So, all sources go through the same signal path.
John,
The Lawrence of Arabia preview is one of the examples of what looks artificially sharp to me. It looks really good, but it has a "hard" sharpness to it that looks processed to me.
Guys, I was really referring to HD film. I often see HD video that looks killer, but HD film is a different story.
Dave's gonna love this. Blu-ray seems to have more bad transfers than HD-DVD. Again, I haven't watched that many, and maybe it was just the luck of the draw, but from what I've seen, Blu-ray doesn't look as good as HD-DVD.
And none of them look as good as HDNet Movies!
Maybe I just haven't seen the good stuff. What's some really good high def DVDs I can check out for comparison?

Already knew this. Heck, if there was no HD DVD to set the bar higher, all Blu-rays would look like the original 5th element!

I need to bring over corpse bride--that is one good looking HD DVD.

You need to come by sometime. I don't know when you last visited, but my setup is finished now. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I never really though of sharpness as being a trait of CRT projection. Oh, this isn't to say they cannot be sharp, but the film-like quality doesn't seem to ring the sharpness bell in my head as the paramount PQ parameter. I guess part of this is that film-based source material and CRT are about as un-sharp in my expectation from what I would imagine video-based source material presented on a fixed pixel display catering to sharpness and not other things (black level, contrast, etc.).
Maybe sharpness was just within the context of film-sourced materials and CRTs and I blew that notion by not having my morning coffee yet. Doh!
