I was gonna go look at it but never got around to it, and then I was gonna bid, but only if it was staying under $500.

Hopefully it was worth it!

I saw that also On the government auctions, I forgot to look at it what did it go for? It was listed as not repairable , but they list it that way if its obsolete in their minds.

only someone who has never bought a Guv Liq. PJ would pay that, or someone who was local and looked at it first. You can very easilly wind up with 200 pounds of scrap metal buying sight unseen. Confused

No kidding! I have been there and it is not fun, but I guess that is the chance you take with this hobby.

I noticed that a couple of locations are starting to show operating pjs. I guess my little talk in JAX had an effect.Smile

I figured you could part it out and make more than $1000 but shows what I know. How much are the lenses worth? At least you know they are there from the picture.

Did you notice how they extended the closing time several times? First it was supposed to end at 5, then 5:08, 5:12 then finally 5:25! That's playing dirty in my opinion.
BTW, has anyone checked out the barco 1209 and know if the tubes are good?

Isn't that how GL works? They keep extending the close time until bidding stops. Works more like a real auction. Can't snipe that way.

Have you noticed that eBay has made it a lot harder to snipe now. The one click bid makes it so they can watch instant readings of current bid and click the bid button and throw in a higher bid right at the end.

Snipping is the only way that I bid. It is too bad that govliq and others make it so hard.

Sniping is low, but if you know how much you are willing to spend then just enter that number and be happy if you didn't win because some other schmuck paid too much.

I do like how GovL works and it states it in the rules I believe.

Can't believe the winner isnt a member here. Yet....

Grog,
It has been that way forever. Hopefully, ebay can find some way to eliminate the sniping. I used to do it because everyone else did it. Now, I just make a bid and walk away.

I've always sniped because I hate needless bidding wars. If everyone figured out the max they would pay and just put in a single bid for that amount, then snipping would be pointless. The problem is all the people out there who slowly keep increasing their bid until they are winning. Then, if they get out bid, they go back to slowly increasing their bid. People like that drive the price of the auction up. The only way to prevent that, that I've found, is to snipe.
You said sniping is low but anyone can win the auction by entering a higher max bid then the sniper.

Who ever won that 9501 will most likely show.....with lots of questions about why it won't power up or where he can find three new tubes! Cheers,
Grog

Yeah, there's nothing 'low' about sniping!!! Why would anyone even have that perception? If I snipe and I win the auction, it's because I outbid you - pure and simple. I'm low because I didn't give you time to rethink your maximum price? On the other hand, If I snipe and DON'T win (it's not as if every snip is a guaranteed win), then it's because your bid was higher - pure and simple.

If you want something and you don't want to get sniped, then put in a bid high enough (above market value) that no sniper will reach your bid. Sniping isn't any sort of guarantee or loophole or cheat.

I rarely bid on fleabay any other way (than sniping). It's simply the only (half) reliable way to buy at anything less than full market price (or higher). If you place bids and walk way, then as Grog indicated, some imbecile will sit there and keep upping his bid until he's winning - even it it means paying more than market price. I simply won't bid on anything traditionally any more - because I rarely ever win anything that way. Every good deal I've ever gotten on the bay was because I sniped it. For me, it's the only way to fly.

yea the lenses could be worth $700. for a set of GT17's or $50. for a set of HD10L's, too bad you can't tell which ones it has from pics. Wink

This is absolute fact.

In fact I attempted a snipe today. My bid was placed 3 seconds before the end of the auction. I lost because my bid was below the high bidder, who, bid three days before me.

One thing sniping does allow is that people psychologically don't like to bid if no one else is bidding because they think something isn't right. This plays into the hands of those who don't get emotional about auctions. Very Happy

Last week I manually snipe an auction for a Linksys wireless router and repeater. I meant to put in $67 but got some contact bounce going on and put in $67,000. Needless to say I won the auction. Fortunately the next sniped bid was for $91. I located an automated sniper the next day.

Of course I think sniping is ethical. People tend to get emotionally involved in an auction and will bid higher than they intend to. I've done it myself. I've wondered why eBay doesn't have auctions like a real the real thing. The hammer doesn't hit the desk until the bidding has stopped.

Personally, I don't care anymore. There are still bargains to be found on ebay, but not as many as there used to be. Everytime I go look at ebay for something that I think I might get cheaper there I usually find it cheaper at regular online store.

Grog,
You are probably correct, but how is that different from any other time? I was one of the big promoters of the gov a long time ago and used to discuss it on AVS frequently. I wonder if you or a lot of other people here would have even known about it because of this. I often wondered if I cut off my nose to spite my face as prices were probably inflated. Of course, I really was just hoping that those that wanted to get a pj inexpensively and get into this hobby could, as I am not a reseller trying to make a buck.
