|
|
Help! I need some help understanding how I can connect a blueray player to my Mitsu WS-55809 to get to its 1080i potential. There are 2 component inputs that appear to be limited to 480P and then there is also a DTV input that appears to be compatiable with 480i, 480P and 1080i, and has component connections as well as RGB with H and V sync connections. I have historically just used a standard progressive scan DVD player into one of the 480P component inputs. I tried plugging that dvd player into the DTV inputs, but the tv just displayed the "blue" screen. I really don't understand the differences between component and RGB. The bottom line is, can I hook up a blue ray player to this set and if so, what is the best method. Your assistance would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Ok, I googled it and now get what hdfury is. Do many, or any, blue ray players have RGB outputs?

That depends. Do you mean Component or do you mean RGBHV (VGA)? Lot's of the BLuray and HD-DVD players have Component outputs but to up-scale DVD you'll have to use the HDMI port.

So are you saying that you can only get a 1080i signal out the HDMI port? Earlier I was looking for a standard upconvert DVD player and ran into the copy protection issue and only found one that would do it, Helios I believe was the brand. Is this the same situation with a bluray player, that you will only get a HD signal out the HDMI connection?

Ok acording to that PDF file you just linked to your TV has the RGBHV inputs that support 480P or 1080i.

The Helios goes against the grain as it were.
I don't own a stand alone Bluray or HD-DVD player so I'm not sure if they'll output 1080i over Component.
One of the other guys will have to pipe in here.

I have an older Mits 55 HD set in my living room I don't remember the model number but it was circa 2000, the RGB-HV input can be switched to component input in the menus. Then you should be good to go for 1080i provided your blu-ray player has 1080i component out. You will not be able to upscale SD-DVD's to 1080i, for that you would need an HD-Fury. IMO for a screen size of 55" I really don't think upscaling SD-DVD's get you much.

Yes, I played around in the menu and set the DTV input to component, However, I then connected my 480p SD DVD player to the DTV input and thought that is should have picked up the DVD signal but it didn't seem to pick it up? Or maybe there is something I am not getting here (really it is obvious that there is much I don't get!)

Yes...I agree you should get an image. I just set my Dish Network HD receiver to 480p and got a 480p image. Make sure you have the proper input input selected.

I just ran through it again, set the DTV input to component (not RGB), connected the dvd player and turned the tv on, it immediatley kept turning off. I'd turn it on, the green led would turn on for about 3-5 seconds, screen stays dark and then the set clicks and then turns itself off???

Try unplugging it for 10 minutes and while it's unplugged hit the power switch on the TV a few times. Then plug it back in and try again.

Once you power it back up push and hold menu and input for 6 seconds. One of the front pannel lights should blink a sequence of codes if the onboard diagnostics has sensed anything. Eg 2 flashes, then a puse, then 2 flashes. Would be a code 22.

OK that was my next guess. One possible therory is a bad ground in your room. Are the TV and the DVD plugged into the same power outlet?

If I plug the dvd back into the component (not DTV input) then all works fine, yes they are both plugged into the same outlet, but the TV's power cord does not have a ground (it is only a two blade plug end). I'm not sure if it is related to a signal that is incompatible between the TV DTV input and the DVD output. Owners manual on the TV states that the DTV input is compatible with SDTV 480i, 480p, and HDTV 1080i and on component with EIA 770.3 standard levels and timing, Y = 1.0Vp-p (includes sync) 75 Ohms; Pr=700 mVp-p, 75 Ohms; Pb=700 mVp-p, 75 ohms. Does a standard progressive scan DVD player put out such a signal? All greek to me!

Which DVD player? If we can find the specifications maybe that I'll tell us. I thought most DVD players only put out 0.7 Vp-p. Though maybe the sync line has 1 Vp-p.
It's an odd situation. How are you cables? They could have a faulty connection. Espcially on the green. This wold give you no signal. Though I don't know the Mitsu's well enough to know why they would shut off.
