I have a Barco 701. 16:9 screen. Screen in 72 wide 40.5 tall. I'm using a PS3. My cross media bar or home screen when you first turn the system on is perfect on the screen and displays in 1080i. I'm connected via component. on source channel 6.
Blue ray looks good also. When I use SD DVD'S My display goes crazy. I get large dark lines running across the screen and the display is too large for my screen. I tested and have confirmed that it does this on both widescreen and Fullscreen DVD's.
Anyone else run into this problem. Btw when I'm setting up my projector, is it best to use the line grid internal pattern or use an external source for example my PS3. If the PS3 is best for setup. Which type of movie would be best when setting it up.

I don't have a Barco, nor a PS3, but it sounds to me like the PS3 is not capable of upconverting the SD-DVD image to 1080i, so it is outputting it at 480p instead. On many projectors, when you run higher resolution images, it shrinks in size, so this could explain the screen size issue. Also, since it is running a larger phosher area, it's possible that the actual raster is extending beyond the phospher area, hitting the side of the tube, and reflecting back causing your black bars. No matter what the cause, I would say certainly don't let it run this way, you could be causing damage to the tubes and/or electronic boards in the PJ. As for the grid pattern, you always want to set-up using the source you will be running from, like the PS3. You can use any DVD which provides a test patter, such as Avia. If you have a computer, you can design your own grid patterns, and burn them to a DVD. This is what I have done, and I also included color bars and grey scale patterns for adjusting brightness, contrast, and white balance, which I found on the internet.

To make the PS3 upscale DVD to 1080i you need an HDCP compliant digital connection. Have you read about the HD-Fury?

If you went from PS3----HDMI to DVI-D cable --->HD-Fury(connected to your PJ) then the PS3 would upscale SD-DVD's.

Otherwise Nitmoe is correct. The PS3 only puts out 480P over componnet. The other thing you could do is set up another memory block in your projector to handle 480P.

When I goto Video settings and setup my connection for component it says 1080i. My question then is am I outputing 1080i on my BR Disc. I plan to get the HDfury soon. Just have to budget the extra money for it. Unlike our government this means waiting till I actually can afford it.

For blu-ray movies, yes, you are outputting 1080i as long as that is the highest resolution selected. As you can see on the menu for the resolutions that you can select, it is in order from lowest to highest quality. For blu-ray, it will start at 1080p (since blu-ray is native 1080p) and work it's way up the list until it finds a resolution that you have selected, and display the one selected. For dvd, since it doesn't do upconverting over component (not very many players do this), it will start at 480p and work it's way up. If you don't have 480p selected, it will go up to 480i. 480i is always selected, as far as I can tell.

The ps3 is weird right now on what it upconverts and what it doesn't. PS2 games will upconvert, but ps3 games won't. For a PS3 game that is 720p only, it will start there, if you don't have 720p selected, but do have 1080i and 480p selected, it will go up the list to 480p. If you don't have 480p selected, it will go to 480i.

Only if you have an hdmi cable will the ps3 upconvert a dvd. Otherwise it will start at 480p, and go to 480i if you don't have 480p selected.

Kind of weird, but this is how things are. At least for right now.
