I'm new to this forum and to PS3 and hope someone can answer my question. How do you show a letterbox image with a DVD on the PS3? When I select 4:3 and Letter box it shows a square image. I have a HDMI connection to my Electrohome Marquee 8000.

4:3 is the big square image. What resolution are you running to your projector? How do you have it connected?

Are you trying to run 4:3 then just display the movie part and not the black bars?

Try setting your PS3 to 720P or 1080i. Both of those are native 16:9

I have tried both 720p and 1080p on the Marquee.
It is connected with: Marquee VIM-HD (With Gamma Circuit). I have a full screen with Blue Ray but not my regular DVDs.

Again... what aspects are all the items in question. Projector, screen, PS3, and the BD title and standard DVD title.

From your first post, given that you're selecting 4:3 and letterbox on the PS3, I'd assume you have a 4:3 screen. But, then in the last post, you say you 'have a full screen'.

Clarification, please.

Glenn has a 4.3 screen and the PJ is set-up for 4.3 raster usage. It was running properly with his old DVD player and scaler.
There doesn't seem to be a proper 4:3 setting on the PS3. There is some kind of confusing "full frame" setting on it but when you choose that it shows an image that's letter-boxed on all 4 sides and stretched in the vertical direction.

Ah. So, no problem with widescreen stuff - it's 4:3 DVD that's getting pillarboxed AND letterboxed on the screen. Hmm... I'm not sure there's a solution. I don't see how he'll even be able to watch a 4:3 DVD on the PS3 full-screen on his 4:3 screen. The PS3 is an HD device and by definition is 16x9. A 4:3 screen is really just kind of awkward now with all widescreen sources - because there's really no way to use it.

I suppose if you hooked up an s-video cable to the PS3 and used it that way, the PS3 might give the choice to switch aspect ratios - I don't know.

The thing is, in this day of HD, and considering that everything 4:3 is crappy SD, raster utilization (from a resolution perspective) isn't really an issue. Of course, uneven wear becomes an issue if you'll be watching a significant amount of material that way, of course.

that's kind of what I suspected but I didn't want to be the one to tell him, he really likes his big-tall screen. Wink A widescreen movie looks normal so I guess he'll just have to use his old player/scaler for his "full frame" 4:3 movies.
Another local guy has a BD stand alone player and it won't playe 4:3 movies either so this isn't a big surprise. AAMOF, even thoguh 4:3 is dying out, I think the fact that HD-DVD does give you a 4:3 option is kinda cool and one more reason to say Sony sucks. Laughing
