Hello, I recently got a hold of a NEC 6pg. It has an interesting problem though. To begin with, when it is first turned on, there are bright raster flashes every 20 seconds or so. After 5 of those it stops, but doesn't sync to a sync or show menus. It will show scrambled information that rushes across the screen from left to right. About 10 minutes in, it will show the menus, and it will eventually sync to a signal for about 15 seconds, and then it goes blank and pops back up saying check signal with a scrambled mess in the background. Soon it will sync the signal again and do the same thing over and over.

I am worried about the flashes at the beginning causing tube wear(it looks like it kinda already did from the previous owner using it like this). Also, why won't it sync to a signal? I tried 640x480 and 1024x768 with the same problem. Any ideas?

I was talking to Curt today about this very problem! I went to look at a 6PG that refused to sync to a regular old 640 x 480 signal. He sugested possible bad solder joints on the BNC's, bad input board or bad system board. That particular set DID work off of S-video fine though. It also didn't have the flashing you described but no matter what I tried it wouldn't register a signal.

Try S-video and see if you get a picture.

I just let it sit for an hour and turned it on again and it didn't have the flashing rasters at the beginning, but it still wouldn't sync to a signal. I will try video or s-video.

My 6PG doesn't have the video/S-video board installed. I have a 9PG Extra I could borrow boards out of.

Most likely you have a bad system board. Pull it and send it to me for testing. That's not unusual for the older PGs at this point.

No, it has to be a system board out of a plain PG. None of them are interchangable.

Well I reseated all the boards and now it works? Well thats good I suppose. Except during setup now I notice my corner focus is not working. I assume the focus board may be bad? Can I put a focus board from a PG-6100 or PG-9200 in my PG-6000?

Thanks!

Plain PG's don't have corner focus. Am I missing something?? And no. The F-drive is different from PG to PG plus. That's because a PGplus DOES have corner focus.

Oh ok. There is an option on the menu I can adjust, so I assumed it had it.

Oh.... the center/edge balance.... doesn't do much. You have to have your electronic focus zeroed as well. Focus the projector, then go back and set ALL the focus menus to Center or 0. THEN adjust CENTER focus using the 3 focus pots on the deflection board. Make sure you flip the blue defocus switch OFF when you do blue. Focus blue (dimmest image) then turn blue defocus back on. NOW try the edge focus.
It won't do much, but you can see it on the H pattern. It's possible that the F-drive is damaged, but that would affect regular focus as well.

It sounds like this chassis could use a good contact cleaning. Might want to stock a spare F and C drive as well as system board replacement. Most of this is considered preventative maintenance when buying this way.

Usually its cheaper to buy a projector that has had this already done and ran out to verify.

I have seen some chassis's that haven't been worth the cost of shipping unless your already planning to restore and keep. Big difference between getting it to run and restoring so it will last. Doug

Personally nowadays I'd drop the tubes into a good plus chassis and call it a day.

Oh.... btw..... make sure you didn't bend a pin somewhere when you reseated the boards. Rare, but not impossible.

You are right, the chassis is a bit "beat up". Honestly, I don't plan to invest much into restoring the set, the CRTs already have some wear as well. I didn't pay much for it, and I am just going to use it as a casual projector. I have a very nice Nec 9PG Xtra I am playing the waiting game on with getting new CRT's. Either I save enough for rebuilds, or find a good used set at a decent price. I am in no hurry to finish off the 9PG, I am still in school and don't have time or money to setup anything serious.

I think I may go through the chassis and clean the connections as advised.
