You know, I am perfectly capable of keeping track of important plot points for 90 minutes, recognizing and interpreting (assuming decent acting) body language and facial expressions, and remembering exposition.
I am so tired of gratuitous flashbacks to scenes earlier in the film, condescending and completely unnecessary pseudo-monologues, unnatural statements of the obvious in dialog and, heaven forbid, redundant narration.
Stop treating me like a moron, damn it! Keep your "unrated director's cut", if all it does is add 1.2 minutes of breasts and language the MPAA strongarmed you into removing, and give me the average IQ cut instead. Good grief.
Am I the only one who gets irritated by this? </rant>
Thank you for listening.

(Okay, I'll take the breasts too. ;-)

You may not be but I notice quite a few others are.

I don't care about the language but give me more breasts!

Indeed... movies often need to cater to the LCD (lowest common denominator! not a screen technology!)
Remember, the average IQ is 100.

aw gee shucks...
i really preferred the original theatrical relase of brade runner over the so-called directors cut... i think the voice-over was in keeping with the film noir feel.
as for the extra breasts - bring-em on! (the 210 min cut of caligula - yessir i'll takes it...)

I'm one of the opposites.
If the plot isn't right in my face (along with the breastages), I lose track and have no idea what's going on. I don't interpret, deduce, figure out or read into things. I save that for repairing projectors.
(This is coming from a guy who thought that Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon were the same character in 'The Departed', and about 1/2 way through I realized that they were different people. I have yet to watch the movie again, as I completely lost track of the plot!)

I totally agree. How many people come out of a movie theater; public or private, shaking their heads and muttering "WTF?" while others wildly and enthusiastically feel the need to talk incessantly about "What a GREAT movie it was" all the frigging way home. The first group are the people who require consistent levels of sophistication of plots; primary and sub, and a beginning, middle, and end, all seamlessly tied together, and the second group just keep multiplexes alive.
I know people who have seen Blaire Witch Project 6-ish times while it was in the theaters. What an absolute pile of crap that was and yet what an unbelievable financial success story. I hated it and films like it. I can't stand ALMOST everything by M. Night Shamalamadingdong. The Village??? WTF was that and who financed that steaming pile of donkey dung?!
Curt you say The Departed lost you and you may need to watch it again but I think it's a flick that deserves purchasing just FOR that reason. IMO The more sophisticated or entertaining a movie, (even well done silliness counts) the more it becomes purchase worthy for periodic revisits. On the flip side are Kevin Costner directed flicks that go on for days because he feels the need to turn the book into a verbatim script.
There's nothing wrong with wanting the start, middle, and end delivered in a no-hassle format. You appear to be the kind of person who when they DO get a chance to sit down and watch a movie don't want to have to take notes or fight to make it to the end. As you said, you reserve that for your other endeavors. I don't mind thick plots with twists and turns that require some thought, but most of the time I don't HAVE the time or desire to work that hard for a completion I can keep down.
I watched Balls of Fury the other night and my wife absotively refused to watch it. She's the kind of person who has a consistent (and often times infuriating) desire to watch 2 types of movies...1) Anything chick flick 2) Good action: Jet Li, (pardon me typing this) <shudder> Steven Segal, Bruce Willis, the recent spate of WWWF wrestlers turned 'actor' (beats me what that's all about. I think it's a plea for me to go to a gym), and occassionally a third category, Disney Pixar releases.
My greatest peve (sp?) is the camera work in action scenes...WTF is going on with the camera shaking in fight scenes these days???? I thought Steady Cams were just that...steady. It seems to me good choreography has been surplanted by sloppy choreography and cinematography in order to hide inaccuracies...they just shake the sh*t out of the camera so the viewer won't notice the kicks and punches are nowhere near the intended victims chin. In a blacked out theater sitting 12 ft from an 8 ft screen I find it nauseating as all hell.
Movies must be made with a marketing research matrix involved that require directors and producers to walk a sharpened picket fence while blindfolded to 'satisfy' the greatest number of consumers. If so, producing an entertaining and artistically creative release under those constraints must be a bitch.

I'm guessing that the majority of movies aimed for the public theaters are designed for the majority of the viewing audience, which illustrates and documents (as a byproduct) the sorry state of affairs in the intellectual society. I grew up believing that broadcast television was for the masses and required no brainpower and that theatrical presentations made an effort to stimulate the mind as well as the body, but apparently in this day and age both are treated for the missing tenant between the ears.

I loved this film. Wonder what my IQ must be? It was 144 in high school - perhaps I've slipped?

In matters of Taste there can be no dispute.
I didn't mean to start a ruckus, I was just ticked off by the flashbacks at the end of the third act in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
