The digital bits is today reporting that both Paramount and Universal have "out" clauses in their contracts, and that with WB's support of BD only, they may be moving very quickly to do the same.
I feel bad for those that still own HD-DVD, if this info is correct, it looks like it's going to die a very fast death.

It is to bad I thought that HD DVD was the better format, but I own both, so I am not at a loss. I found though over the past year more good titles were released on Blu and when they were duel format the blu-ray titles were cheaper so that is what I purchased.
I am just glad that the war maybe over and there will be cheaper players coming out for mainstream adoption, to drive the disc prices down, and help out the smaller rental shops to stock hi-def releases.

ecrabb, who missed the WB announcement??? I'm sure everyone heard about it when it happened.
I got lucky, had a X2 for a month or so, sold it the day after WB made their announcement...the writing was then on the wall...although I didn't think Paramount and Universal would be able to follow suit so fast. Now I just need to dump the rest of my HD-DVD titles...SAY CURT, you want a deal on about 20 HD-DVD's????
The nice thing about this is we will now see many more people moving into the HD disc format, and as you say, prices will drop. I'm sick of either paying 25-35 dollars per disc, or driving down to a Fry's in San Diego to buy at 17-25 dollars. (but that's only when I go down there for a football game, and the season's about over)

Kenny, yes, pls email me at curtpalme@hotmail.com.
I'm only using the HD for demos anyways, so 20 DVDs will last a few years for me.

BTW, I'm assuming these moves were made prior to CES as a very strategic move? Sounds like there's no time for HD DVD to counter before the show, which pretty much sets the years trends, right?

If Curt doesn't want all those HD-DVD's I may be interested in what's left.

Yeah, it seems if you want to end this war very fast, this would be a good move....although, I would also think that making this announcement about a month before Christmas would have ended it even sooner.
Curt, I will PM you with a list as soon as I get word back from a friend who wants a few of these, I just called and left a message on his cell phone...he's got a booth at the CES so it may be toworrow before I hear back from him.

I wouldn't be at all surpised... having one format means all studios can focus on just pumping the titles out ..
Remember when DVDs started off in 1995? There were so few titles. THen within a year, "Video" stores had totally converted over to DVD.
The last VHS video store, that solely supported videos in Melbourne went out of business late last year. I saw that as an omen
How long does it take for a format to totally die? In Australia it was about 2-3 years before the majority of sales were DVD and 10 years until the format was totally/absolutely gone, what was it in the USA?

If HD-DVD does kick the bucket, then oh well. I'll still have a damned good upscaling player and a handful of solid movie titles in HD. Granted, I bought in early on, so I've gotten my money's worth already. As long as my PS3 holds up, I'm ready for whatever those money-grubbin' bastages finally decide to do.

I too am disheartened that WB is bailing out of HD-DVD, but it's not the end of the HD-DVD world. Even if the other two major studios bail out, there are still the HD-DVD titles that we have and they probably won't be released again on BD so the only way to watch them is on HD-DVD. WB will continue to release what they have in the pipeline until the end of May, 2008.
So, for the meantime, I have plenty to watch (I just received the full set of Harry Potter HD-DVD's yesterday - $45 delivered for the set of 4- woo hoo!! ).
And my A35 is nearly as good an upscaling SD player as the XA2, so I'm sitting pretty for now.
My 2 cents

Watching the remastered DVDs of the Bond films on the A2 is really nice and not originally anticipated. Its a keeper in my dual-format home.
