I think I need a setup dvd. Every time I work on my pj I seem to get different results and I'm not sure if it is because I have trouble keeping track of what I have and haven't done or if it is related to a something else. Anyway I think a setup dvd will help me do the same thing each time I do a setup. It seems like I'm always getting interrupted during the process and losing track of where I was. This could be attributed to my age too I suppose. Which one is the best choice? I think it would be good to have some test patterns on it as well.

I use Joe Kane's stuff; in fact, the first setup disc I got (and still have) is A Video Standard on laserdisc. Digital Video Essentials is his latest, available on HD-DVD.

I just ordered the CRT setup disc available through this website; it deals with the technical aspects of setting up the projector. It came out last spring and has been reviewing extremely well. Go to the main page, curtpalme.com , and click "products for sale" then "CRT step by step setup guide."

Thanks, Mark

I considered buying the graham johnson disc months ago, but was put off by the 3-4 week delivery time. I guess if I had bought it back then I would have it now.... Rolling Eyes

If you want set up instructions, you got two choices:
1) Guy's instructions:
http://www.curtpalme.com/Focus_and_Mechanical_Aim1.shtm
2) Graham's disc.

If you are looking for calibration discs, that is another matter, but it sounds like you want set up instructions.

Calibration discs have test patterns.

On DVD, you can get Avia or Digital Video Essentials (DVE). Avia is easier to navigate and understand.

On HD DVD, you can get DVE.

On HD cable and sat, you can record the patterns from HDNet.

For PC, you can download any number of test patterns.

Just beware of colorspace and overlay if you are using static patterns or generator apps rather than playing a disk through your player app. This was no problem when I was doing everything VMR, but now that I seem stuck with overlay for BD/HD with PDVD it is giving me headaches.

Also, I have AVIA, and everyone says it is easier to navigate. If that is so, then DVE must be really hellish, because trying to navigate Avia drives me bananas. I am constantly badgered by little "for dummies" level interludes when I am just trying to get to one or another pattern or tone. I will say that this has eased up a bit since I started using PDVD, though. One thing it does seem to be good at is letting you interact with DVD menus properly.

Blu-Ray was released waaaaaaaay before it was ready for prime time (only released because HD DVD was ready and released). As such, it did not have the full implementation of BD-J required by set up discs (yep, yet another way Sony and the BDA has given it to consumers in the a$$). Anyway, the DVE for BD could not be done before the features were complete. Current, DVE is scheduled for BD the end of March (but DVE always gets delayed, so don't look for it until the summer).

Go to "Advanced Avia" from the title menu, then you have direct access to all the patterns.

Thanks. I know this, though. I am just an uncoordinated monkey, or something, because I'm telling you I had nothing but problems with it for months. Aaagh, that hokey theme music!

It was mostly just poor software interface to the menus (zoom player, I was using mostly) I think. Like I said, I don't have trouble with it under PDVD.

I also think the Avia navigation blows. Yes, I know about the Advanced Avia selection. It still blows.

Hey, on the subject of Blu-ray setup DVD's: does anyone know how get to the "picture calibration easter egg" on Sony discs from powerdvd? The insert says type 7669 on the remote while in the menu, but I haven't had any luck trying that from the keyboard.

For that matter, does anyone know if the "picture calibration easter egg" is in any way useful?

Is AVIA DVD or DVE a correct tool to setup Full-HD projectors? I can't have full-HD patterns but are black and colors pluges the same on SD and HD?

When does HDNET broadcast their test patterns and what patterns to they provide. Got any screen shots?

I have Avia, HD-DVE and Graham's dvds. Avia and DVE are good for patterns and such.

For complete, end-to-end set-up, Graham's dvd is the way to go. I do not have experience with other pjs other than sony 1272 and a little nec 6pg. The logical steps seems like it would be overall the same for any pj.

I use the DVE and awating the BR version (hopefully we don't have to wait till summer). The test patterns are good and the "montage of images" it runs through give a nice quality of video for my reference puposes.
I also bought the HQV Benchmark DVD and it had some neat test patterns but admittedly I don't use it that much. It also explains the significance of the features it is testing so you get to learn a lot about the video you watch. If you're a perfectionist and have a low budget it may be better not to know a lot of this stuff. Ignorance is bliss.
