Update:
Just pulled the lenses off the unit I'm projecting now to get a better look. No wear on red, next to no wear on blue and pretty good wear on green as well as faint burn in. I'd say 9 on the red, 4-5 on the green and 6-7 blue. Both projectors were set up fairly well so at least it's wide and even across the board.
On the projector that'll undoubtedly be parted out, the reds an 8-9, green is 3-4 at best, the blue is 4-5. Again, wide and even.
Original:
So, umm, I kinda got really impulsive today thanks to Craigslist and went and bought two Barco Graphics 1208s(/2) projectors for $200. They've definitely been put through their paces though...lots of red lights inside one, really bad green tubes and "eh" on the blue tubes. But hey, at least the red tube looks great! That's not a given or anything, is it?
But eh, so I went through with it anyways. I figured maybe I could part out certain things to help fund fixing up one nicer projector. I'm kinda scared that I made a bad choice though...they at least have MEC/Panasonic tubes so there's some upside...thoughts? Comments? Advice? Concerns?

The parts are worth more. So i should part it out. Maybe the parts of one machine can help you make money to fix the other. Tubes aren't that expensive if you find the right place.

THe sets with Panasonic tubes are what you want, you done good.
REad the tips section on the main site for tech info on the 1208, but also read the 808, as the sets are similar, and the 808 has the most info. If you can get one to show an image, then scour ebay for a blue tube. There's one there right now that's for the Marquees at $350 or so. Too expensive, but still, 1/2 the price of a new one, and with a CRT socket mod, it will fit into the BArco chassis.
Decent tubes can be found on eBay from time to time, chances are they'll have a bit of wear, but they will be $100-200 or so. Parting out a set might get you $200-300 on a good day, but as is sets are going for dirt cheap on ebay (but not at $100 each.. )

Oh, one shows a fairly descent image even through S-Video w/ a DVD and a 2 minute convergence/focus setup. But, here's something I can't figure out to save my life that's probably super simple...how do you switch it to project from a floor setup? It's set for ceiling right now and I won't be mounting it. I searched all over the net and scoured the install and user manual but no luck. I feel like an idiot...
Anyways, I've actually got decent red and blue tubes. What I need is actually a green tube as both are shot to high heaven me thinks. There's just a lot of burn in on the best one that was making raster setup just a rough proposition...
Random though, these are my first CRT's and I haven't messed with them in years and never like this, but you know, I'm diving in and doing stuff and understanding stuff almost as if I have in many cases simply because I've been reading so much since I got the crazy idea to try it out over the summer. Feels good...oh yeah, I could use a wireless remote too...how much is that going to set me back?

Aftermarket remote with the Barco codes programmed into it: $60 plus shipping.
Original barco remote- check eBay. |
Excellent! Nice to have an image that's right side up. There's a couple Barco's on e-bay right now. Will any of them work? Also, I've got a Home Theater Master something or other remote...I should see if that's got codes.

Yeah, I figured worse case scenario I learn some more about how these work, get something going on the wall for awhile and in time hopefully sell parts to make some money back. He was asking $250 but didn't hesitate when I offered him $200 at all. I almost wish I went lower. They were from his workplace and had just been sitting in a warehouse and they were about to throw them out.
