Anyone else having problems getting bluray and HD-DVD's from the Carrollton distribution center. I have a list of approx 15 titles that are all showing long or very long wait. Even when I clear my queue I never receive the new releases. Is it just me or are others having problems. Perhaps its an elaborate way to further throttle excessive renting habits. It appears people in other parts of the country are getting pretty decent service. What gives?

I've had excellent service. Hardly ever takes more than a day or two in my area. In my 20-disk all HD/BD queue (down from 30 a month ago - we've been watching movies!), two are marked 'short wait' and one - Superbad - is marked 'long wait'. But, I live in Des Moines, IA; the whole metro area including outlying communities probably isn't 1/10 of the population DFW metro area. So, I bet it's just sheer numbers. They probably just don't have enough media.
Did you have your account before the holidays? Did anything change? I wonder if a bunch of new PS3's and HD-DVD players under the Christmas tree triggered lots of new Netflix subs, which in turn would strain the service in larger metro areas. Complete speculation, though - I could be totally wrong.

I've been a Netflix subscriber since April 2000, and the HD rentals have been bad for about 12-18 months. Apparently Netflix is blaming the studios for their throttling practices, who it appears have a contract which limits the number of copies Netflix has available for rental. They want people to buy not rent the disks, which to me seems ridiculous. I know I've gone out and bought a title after renting it. This contract is up for renewal in April '08 so hopefully things are set to improve.

Or maybe netflix is now more interested in pursuing VoD (today's announcement) instead of physical HDM...

I know every time I try to watch any sort of crappy video on the internet, I think about how great it would be if I could get ALL my movies THAT way. It would be so nice to never own anything and just watch whatever crap I want whenever I feel the urge... never mind the quality. 
Yeah, I can't wait, either. Yay.

Well I'm assuming the idea is to allow the 1080P HD copy to be downloaded, or maybe that's wishful thinking. I certainly can't imagine how bad a youtube type feed would look at 110". Sounds like purgutory.

We had some slowness issues from Carrollton. Luckily, my local Hollywood video has started getting all new HD DVD and BD movies so I can always go there.

There's no way in hell any IP-based download offerings will even be in the same ballpark as what we're used to with HD-DVD and BD. Not even close. Even using some P2P-type technology, we're talking about movie downloads that take a day or two - on a fast broadband connection - if you're not using it for anything else. One movie.
No, if we even get HD at all, it will be bit-starved 720p so that you can download it in 3-4 hours - or a couple overnight - on a modest broadband connection. It will look like complete ass compared to HD-DVD/BD, but 90% of the population won't notice because of the millions of 720p flat panels and projectors. Even if they can tell the difference, it won't matter because of the convenience factor. MP3 and online music, anybody? Speaking of audio, we'll be lucky if we'd get discrete surround. Matrixed stereo would be more likely because of file size.
We'll see, but I don't think we'll have to worry about it, anyway. I'll bet money that the Netflix online movie thing will be as big of a flop as it was for the half-dozen-odd companies that have tried it. I predict that the Netflix online movie thing will be dead inside of a year.
The only way online movie downloads will have much success is if Apple does it and makes it part of the iTunes/iPod/AppleTV family (which is rumored to be true). All the other Windows-based solutions are just too kludgy and hamstrung by DRM, and nobody else's hardware is interesting enough to compel people to spend money on. Still, even if an Apple service has some success, it won't mean much to us true HT enthusiasts, though - not for the next few years, at least.

I've been a huge net-flix fan but ever since I enabled the HD-DVD feature I simply don't get new movies anymore from them. Bourne Ulitmatum has been in the 1) slot for a f*cking month now. IT's not even new movie, it came out weeks ago. truth be told, as much as I admire netflix for being revolutionary in the rental biz, I will be glad when the next bestest thing comes along.
