Great price for sure. Almost, ALMOST makes me want to build an HTPC. I'm waiting for stand alone's to come down in price. The LG BH200 below should kick start the competition for dual format stand alone's...I hope. It looks as tho both formats are here to stay for the foreseeable (sp?) future.

Erik do you know if that drive will burn dual layer in both formats? Sorry I didn't research on my own...I had a late night in the HT and just dragged out. (Just in time to hopefully watch the Packers thump the Bears on their home turf...and it's frigging cold and windy in the midwest today.)

What one saves on the drive will have to make up for in the video card department and maybe having to buy the retail software to get REAL support. I can only conclude the reason why I had BSOD was due to the video chipset in the Abit F-I90HD motherboard. I have since returned the unit (yesterday), and replaced it with a standalone appliance. Of course, its still tempting.

Mine doesn't run. YET. I can see the contents of the disk but as soon as PowerDVD loads I get a really quick BSOD and then the system reboots. Too quick for me to see what the error was. I was hoping I would be able to watch something on this over the holidays, now it's going to be days and days of arguing. That's the HTPC way....

I wonder if you have to select a Region in the hardware to playback DVDs and BDs.

My combo drive has been working perfectly from day one I was using an Nvidia 8500GT in XP but I have now upgraded to Vista and an ATI 2600XT. XP didn't want to play nice with my audio drivers when I wanted to use Dolby TrueHD but it works perfectly in Vista. Also the Nvidia 8500GT card would not allow me to use custom resolutions in Vista. First I replace the 8500GT with my 6600GT but then a few days later the fan broke on the 6600GT and smoked the card so I decided to replace it with the ATI 2600XT and it has been working perfectly since.
For software I am using PowerDVD Ultra version 3319a. Don't use the software that came with the drive. Don't purchase the software from Cyberlink as in the lastest version they have crippled some of the features that I like the most, including the ability to play back disks that have been copied to your hard drive.
If you want to keep it legal, purchase it from Cyberlink then download version 3319a (google 3391a and torrent) and use that version.
Also AnydvdHD is your friend
Chris.

Chris,
I wouldn't think you would be able to playback HD with only a 6600GT. Did it work OK or was the card too slow?
Thanks,
Erik

It worked perfectly until the fan broke and the card smoked I was able to use software to do all the decoding as I am running a Quad core proecessor.

I've been messing with mine since my blu-ray discs came at around 11 this morning, and have yet to get picture or sound out of it. Really starting to tick me off.
No crashes or errors, just non-functionality. All three of the discs I've tried so far act slightly different, but the upshot is that they wind up looping on one or another number in the "title" field, and I never see an image or hear a peep. No idea what the problem might be, at this point.

What version of the Cyberlink software are you using?
To find out this info go to "About" and then click on the name under "licence" and it should list a bunch of info including the patch info.

Well, I am not sure what the heck is going on with the patches. "About" just says 7.3(Ultra), but I have downloaded and installed, without any errors, three ~98MB "patches" so far. Currently, if I hit the "upgrade" button, it tells me that 3319f is "new". I am downloading that now, since it can't get any worse.

EDIT: Whoops, I see what you mean now by "click on the name". Not sure what I was at before but I am definitely at f now. However, clicking on "upgrade" still wants me to download f again. *boggle*

I uninstalled that and installed a new copy of 3319a. Exact same symptoms.
I'm still really stumped as to what the problem might be, but that doesn't seem to be it.

That makes sense, I'll be running a AMD 64 4800 X2 so I guess I'll still need a card to do some of the decoding.

You might be ok with the 4800 X2, my previous HTPC was a 3800 X2 and it would play all but the very highest bit rate movies with no issues when using the 6600GT video card.
Try it and see before going out and spend money on the video card. FYI the ATI 2600 XT does full hardware acceleration and it only cost me $100.

Anydvd HD takes care of the requirement for HDCP compliance.

Got it working. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this earlier. I was running an older version of the XTreme-G forceware drivers from tweaksrus/tweakforce. Cleaned that out, installed the latest WHQL, and Bob's your uncle.

All, this product clearly advertises that it can output HD resolutions over analog video transport. As such, there is no binding HDCP on the analog output. I did not get a chance, though, to test the HDMI output on the Abit F-I90HD before I returned the combo drive.
