Hi all,

1st post (and first question).

For those considering purchase of a "preowned" D50 or G90 - I have heard from more than one source that the usage and CRT timers in the service menu roll over to zero after 10,000 hours in the D50 and may or may not in the G90.

Can anyone confirm or dispute this allegation?

Thanks

I do not know from personnel experience but a posting along these same lines at the A forum said that the D50 goes past 10,000 hours

My G90 rolled over 10,000 last month:

The chassis hours kept incrementing over 10,000+.
The CRT hours rolled over to 0000.

IIRC I have seen pics of G70s and D50as over 10000 hours.. The hours rolled back to 0000 but the counter display turned to black numbers. That's the first I have seen of a G90.

Yep. And plenty more life still left in them, plus I'm stocked with spares. Thumbs Up

Thanks all for the response. It was a big help to friend of mine who subsequently picked up two G90s - one with roughly 900 hours on it and another with just 400.

Regarding the D50, mine passed the 10,000 mark some time ago. Yet a recent check shows the operation timer and the CRT timers at the exact same value (roughly 6000 hours) suggesting that they did in fact all roll over.

Coincidentally, I had a calibration performed at around 10,000 hours. The tech said it’s possible that he might have reset the timers at that time, although I find no specific reference to such a procedure in the service manual. Furthermore, I think it unlikely that the manufacturer would make it easy to alter the readout of the operations timer for obvious reasons.

You can reset the CRT timers on Sony PJ with a special remote keys sequence (once you replaced a tube for example) but you can't reset the chassis timer this way. To reset or change the value of the chassis timer, you need to change the Dallas/ST NOVSRAM content using a standalone programmer. FYI, the Sony timers are stored in this NOVSRAM in hexadecimal value of the time passed with 1/100 of second precision Wink
I personally did change the chassis timer on a G70 unit that had its YB board failed. Since I replaced this board with another one, I've modified the NOVSRAM content of the new YB board to update the unit serial number and the chassis timer counter within the NOVSRAM Wink .
