|
|
Hi I'm a CRT Projector noob, just acquired a Sony G90 that has a very dim Green tube. The unit was used in an auditorium at my corporation, but was removed when the space was remodelled. At the time it was removed it was working properly. It then sat in storage for a year and I picked it up when it was about to be scrapped.
When I got it home and powered it up, green was very dim. Is that an indication that the tube was damaged... or is it possibly something else? I'm an EE and can debug (if I can find a set of schematics), but I'm not an analog guy... and definitely not a high voltage guy - so mucking about with crt's is something I usually try to avoid.
Is low light output the typical symptom of a failed tube? (I'd hate to spend money replacing a tube only to find that's not the problem)?
TIA!
Dave

To start take the lenses off and see how toasted the green tube is...
Or just bring it to my house and I'll send you home with a fully fuctional G70
Have you checked G2 for the green tube, possibly they just ran it with low output

You wouldn't believe the stuff they throw out here. Most of the time they don't let folks take it, but in this case it was a fully depreciated so a buddy of mine got it for a buck and he for some reason decided he didn't really want it so he just handed it off to me.
As you can probably tell... I REALLY want it . If I can get it back in shape for a couple thousand I'll be a very happy camper. Currently I'm running a Panasonic AE900U (720p LCD) to a 120" Elite (came for free with the projector) and while I WAS happy with it... the Sony is in a totally different realm. Not just the ability to go to 1080p for Blu-Ray or gaming (or even more than that from my HTPC), but to do it with a unit that has visual performance that blows away any LCD or DLP units on the market... I'm just hoping I can fix it for a reasonable amount of $$$.

New green installed by VDC into your LC housing will run you about $1600. If you are going to swap the green I would suggest also replacing the C-element at the same time. Doesn't cost much and noticeably improves green colorimetry at the expense of a little light output. It's very easy to swap out, just be careful handling the magnetics and avoid damaging the 2 thin wires at the front that clip onto the lens housing.

I can't believe nobody's told you yet, but for getting a G90 for free...
YOU SUCK! ...a little less, now.
Congrats! Welcome to the forum, and hopefully soon to CRT nirvana.

Someone is selling P19LUGs for $900? Not sure who it was. Just the bare tube. Fit yourself.
If I remember correctly Curt had access to some PT22s for around $1200 bare.
I'd love to have a few spares. A spare chassis with parts would also be handy too when people scrap 'em. I heard a story (was it Graham?) who witnessed a G90 being dumpstered.
I don't understand the logic - there's a computer company here in Melbourne that throws out old servers, PCs, monitors (even flatscreens). One of my employees decided to he'd salvage a whole stack of gear. He had no idea that the company had installed DVRs that captured around the dump masters. The a$$holes called the police who promptly arrested him. It got thrown out of court in the prelim hearing but still, if gear is being thrown out, what's the problem with someone else making use of it??
So much stuff is thrown away that still has value. Its like when some poor old timer dies and he's collected decades worth of test gear, manuals etc and the family throw it all out and don't let anyone touch it. I reckon the owner wouldn't have wanted his stuff wasted like that.

Well I was just cruising around the internet and noticed something... the unit I've got isn't a G90. The guy I got it from SAID it was a G90 but it doesn't LOOK like a G90 (and there's no identifying marks on the outside at all). I dug some more and what it looks like is a VPH1292Q (at least the case), which is apparently the version prior to the G90 (sadly with somewhat less resolution... but happily with plenty for 1080p).
So does anything change in that case... are parts even still available for this older model?

Still a great projector. did you see the manual in the 1292 section here? Don't go ordering a tube till you find out what the condition of yours is, it could be as simple as somebody adjusted the brightness to 10%. download the manual and do a basic setup, let us know what you find.

I agree. I have dumpster dived many times. I have made some great discoveries and saved lots of stuff from landfill. You'd be surprised how many people can use old stuff and are glad to have it for free or close to it.
Here in Toronto there was a city counselor that use to go trawling for trash in the richer neighbourhoods. SHe would be on the local TV station all the time with amrwoires and chest of drawers, many antique. Some one that had thrown one out saw here on TV and when they found out the piece was worth thousands they took the counselor to court trying to get it back saying she had "stolden it from the property". The judge rulled anything that's left for trash is fair game. As I recall the only stipulation was no tresspassing.
So I guess you can't walk up into someones car port and sift through their garbage but certainly snag it off the curb on trash nite.
In your friends case that just the company being selfish azz holes.

Still, congradulations. You are the proud owner of the worlds loudest CRT projector. Don't worry there are fan mods available to fix that.
