Hi everyone,
I am a total noob when it comes to CRT but have always wanted one eversince the first day I started looking into HT. Since at the time CRT's were out of my (price)league, I had no other choice but to purpously avoid any and all contact with these things in order to protect my wallet
As a result I spent the last 6 years making due with an XGA Panny LCD...
That is until 18/11/2007 and my 30th BDay!!!
I am now the proud owner of a nice BG808s with good tubes (xcept for green but the wear is slight and I can keep the 16:9 inside the worn area) but there's one catch:
This PJ used to be a Seos version and one of the previous owners -not the guy I bought it from myself- (I got into contact with him on a dutch forum) explained that he changed out some boards and an EEPROM to revert this PJ to an actual BG808s.
Besides this he claims that the tubes are of the sharper MEC variety...
Anyway, long story short, after taking the PJ home, I started to make a work of a quick setup in order to get some instant gratification and it worked great. Only problem was getting geometry correct on the left hand side of the image which in turn gave me some issues with regards to convergence.
The reason I had these issues is that when I wanted to change Left Bow and Left Keystone, I was unable to do so as I kept getting an I2C error at address 86H.
I got into contact with the guy that did the mods, but he tells me that Left bow and keystone adjustments were only ment for the Seos version. However, when I look in the standard BG808s manual, these controls are listed too....
What can I make of all this?
And can I make the necessary corrections without left bow? I suppose if so, this will make it a lot harder???
Anyway, thanks for any insights you may give on the matter.
From what I've seen so far, I'm in for a real treat provided I get out all the kinks...

The tech has done what I do here as well, changes out the convergence tray. He's right, left pin and key were only found in rare 808 models, most convergence trays don't supply that.
I'd get a COG (convergence on green) board which will allow more precise geometry adjustments. They are hard to find, but I have one on eBay right now. If it doesn't sell, I won't relist it, as I now have a bunch of SEOS units here myself that will need those boards..

Hi Curt,
thx for the fast reply!
Figures you would be the first to chime in
As I have not yet opened the PJ up completely, I have not had a chance to check on any of the boards.
Is there any way to determine whether I have the COG board already without opening it up?
If this implies that for raster shifts only the green tube lights up, than this is already the case.
And while I have your attention can I also ask if it is normal that corner and even side convergence is not that great on this PJ or is it that, being the noob I am, I have not yet mastered the art of setting it up correctly?
To be honest (and I know this should be the first step), I have not yet deleted all memory blocks out of fear that I would have nothing at all left worth watching if I'm unable to set it up from scratch myself
To give you some more info, the backend of the PJ is at 177" (sorry, I don't know your 'feet' measurements and I have not yet measured the distance counting from the lenses ) and I'm throwing a 98" wide picture right now.
The reason I'm probably going overkill on the screensize is that I will start construction on my first house in a couple of months (which will in turn take approx 1.5 years) and I want to keep the tube usage maximal in order to ensure that I don't run into wear-related issues after I have moved.
I know I still have quite a bit of reading to do and I will, but any tips&tricks from experienced CRTers like yourself that could help speed up the process sure would be great!
I mean, if a quick setup like the one I did can yield a halfway decent 1080p pic like it did, I can only imagine what's in store for me once I figure this thing out completely
Thx again!

That's odd, I know for sure mine has it. Glad you responded as I would have assumed it's normal. Which models had that option, and why? Were they meant for some specific purpose, or was it just an option like leather or a sunroof?

It was an option on all sets, even the Barco 800s. Out of the box without it, the geometry isn't perfect on Barcos, one side will always be slightly keyed or pin'ed. The COG board takes care of that. It's also mandatory for stacking or blending, for that extra control.

I've got a COG board but never installed it, largely because I don't know where it installs. So - how do I install a COG board?

Interesting - I thought that this (left bow) was a software version issue....
