Thanks for the very informative forum.
I have the above pj, which i bought in 2000. I have 6200 hours on it. Three days ago i noticed when I turned power off, i have a Blue dot close to the center of the screen, which would get a "tail" on it and then disappear--no doubt as the high voltage decayed. It is fairly bright. It happens also when i Power down from Standby, with or without an input.

My PQ is good, convergence is good-iow, the pix is as good as it has ever been on a 103" wide screen.

Is this a "real" problem, or just a quirk? It certainly is a change.

I live in the boonies of N ID and there are no service folks around here.

thanks for any help,
Ron

I had almost the same thing happening to my 8500 except it was the red tube. It looked like a rose blooming before it faded away after shutdown. I too didn't have any other issue's with the pj. I asked around, just as you are, and the concensus was debris or a contaminant in the cathode being excited and "burning off".
So I pulled the pj all apart, cleaned all the contacts, resealed the HV leads at the boots, reseated all the socketed chips, made sure the LVPS heater mod was done and P14 voltage was right, checked voltage on the neckboard at a location I've forgotten (ask Mike Parker which part is supposed to slam voltage to zero when the pj is powered off) and lastly, tapped very lightly on the neck of the red tube to loosen the floater.

It still continued to do it for about another week and then just stopped. That was almost a year ago.

Let me/us know what you found, and best of luck.

Greg

Greg, thanks much for the reply.

I'm not going to get into this pj. i'm certainly not qualified. i will let things settle out, hopefully it's nothing serious. It seems strange if the Power Supply output is supposed to be grounded on power off, that it is only the blue which still shows. i would guess this grounding takes a few seconds, and that's about all the time blue is showing. I'll post back in a week or so.

thanks again,
Ron

TV/Projector: All of them!

You SHOULD get into the projector. Trust me, I'm not qualified either, and it's never stopped me..Wink

Seriously though, changing over CRT sockets is no big deal. It's outlined here:

http://www.curtpalme.com/ElectrohomeMarquee_Layout7.shtm

All three sockets are the same, swap out the blue and red and see if the problem switches to the red. If so, the socket is bad. If not, you have a slightly gassy/leaky blue tube and chances are there won't be any long term damage. As already posted, the 'problem' could go away by itself.

If you really don't want to open the set, then post where you are and update your profile, we might be able to find someone near you to help.

Hello

I have seen this on a few tubes; if it is not eroding the phosphor then just use it like that. Do not swap in a new tube until you are certain that the Spot Kill system is working properly.

Tim, thanks, i think i will just let this go for a few weeks and see if anything gets worse.

Curt, thanks for the link. i have read a few of the pages for the Marquee, but not this one. I have watched a guy from Portland, who used to be a TAW rep, align it twice. he had the side panels off, but geez, i have no idea how he even did that. I know, you have it in your Tips, and i will read up on it. I do not have a service manual---only a copy of an Operation manual.

I had some crushed blacks (caused by a new Sony HD300 HD receiver) and with William Phelps help via emails, we corrected that in 2003 via settings--not hardware. I'm certainly not afraid to try things, and i would be ready to do it if i had poor and getting worse PQ.

If i have a failing component, i want to be aware of the what the next step is---after all it is football season, and my 20" 1989 tube spare set would not work well----i'm too spoiled Smile.

thanks again for the help,
Ron

and i've updated my profile and signature, but my sig doesn't show up on previous posts---maybe it will once i post this with it filled in.

I've been meaning to reply---

As suggested the problem went away about 2 weeks ago. there is NO lingering blooming when powering off. I hope it stays this way.

Thanks again for the info,
Ron
