Back in the day as a network engineer/PC tech it just seemed to me that there really wasn't "one" preferred brand because every time I chose one, there'd be a mass of premature failures sooner or later. I'd switch to another brand; only to have the same thing happen again. <rinse and repeat> When catering to an office environment cost was the major deciding factor despite trying to tell the decisionmakers that brand X they wanted had a history of failures.
'Course, that was a million years ago and drive technology, or at least reliability, has changed considerably.

I've had two die on me but both times it was due to me doing somthing stupid.

Btw. anyone else ever taken off the stickers that say do not remove (on the seagate drives they really mean do not remove)

im a seagate / western digital user. mostly seagates due to all the scsi and fiberchannel i run at home. just lost my 2nd drive in 7 years. but that isn't bad for running 40 drives 24x7 for 7 years now.

Keep the drives cool and they will last longer. I mount fans in front of drives and it's amazing how just a little air flowing over the drives will cool them down.

WD, then Maxtor. (SATA II perferably.)
