Hi Guys,
Likely will be joining the G90 club this weekend. Finally reached a deal on an almost new 500 hrs G90. Excellent condition and even smells new! I do have some questions as I am moving from a 9500LC Ultra.

1. How much louder is a G90 then an unmodified 9500? The G90 was in a hush box when I demo'ed it so I could not really tell. It will not be in a hush box in my installation.
2. Can you get scan lines to show at 1080p on a G90 if set up right? How about a full fade to black?
3. Can you have the case painted? I have a black ceiling and would like to have it painted by the local auto body place to a nice black, like a Vision One case.
4. How well does a G90 hold convergence. My 9500LC Ultra's does a great job, just wondering about the G90?
5. What issues do people have with a G90? Any draw backs compared to Marquees?

thx

Oh yea one more question.

I have heard that the G90 uses a "high resolution" CRT compared to the 9500LC Ultra which does not. What is the difference? does it affect focus and resolution that much?

I wouldn't consider going from a 9500 Ultra to a G90 an "upgrade", more of a "side-grade"

The spot size on the stock 9500 tubes is slightly larger than the G90's P19LUGs. Maybe some HD10F lenses but thaat's debatable.
The 9500 with Mike Parket's mods and upgraded yokes is a seriously impressive machine and most would say on par with a G90.

I've just fired up one of my G90s. I can honestly say that the difference between my BG 1209, Vision 1 and G90 is less than (at a guess) 2-5% variance in performance. 9" machines of this calibre are all very similar in PQ.

Kind regards

Congrats!

Regardless of the comparable specs, I wouldn't trade my single G90 with 9,550 hours for a 9500 Ultra with new tubes.

Yes, the Marquee has killer mods available and the repair parts are 1000x easier to obtain, but IMHO, there's just something magical with a stock G90.

Maybe it's the FINE-mode setup controls available on the remote. I haven't opened the chassis of my G90 in 2 years and over 5,000 hours. And instead of one COURSE click of focus and geometry, the G90 gives you 256 available clicks for FINE tuning. Scheimpflug is 10x smarter in the G90 too.

Scanlines at 1080P/60... no problem. That's the sweetspot for mine. 1080P/72 starts to get soft... I don't know if that was a scaler limitation or maybe my tubes aren't fresh enough.

True fade to black is easy. Especially with gamma (on scaler or HDMI input card). Pro calibration is essential (for both the 9500 Ultra and the G90).

Went and picked up the G90 today...boy it was in better condition then I remembered. Not a scratch on the case and zero ware on the tubes. Everything fires up and runs nice.

I have always heard that G90s ran louder then stock 9500s, but let me tell you this is a quite CRT. There was little noise around us and I could hardly hear the fan. Nice...

Only issue I can see is that inside the top cover where you store the remote control there is a polarity cover that had warped and unless you put some pressure (the previous owner had cut a credit card and taped it down) it turns off. Anyone know the part I am talking about? I will take pictures tonight.

Tell you what..I havent even installed or hooked this baby up yet..but it wont be long before I clear some more stock. I already have one of my 9500LC Ultras on Videogon.

Does anyone know if you can do a stack of a G90 and a Vision One. Although I really didnt want to mix projectors nor take up the floor space with having one on the floor one on the ceailing...but is it an option?

thx,
Jim

Yes, you can stack any two projectors. But, in the case of Marquees, with the firmware at or above a specific level (I think it's 3.4)
then you have an ACON stacking option which makes co-converging the two PJs a lot easier. When dealing with two PJs that don't have
that option, you have to do it the hard way. All by hand and by eye.

That's a great picture. Looks like Luke following 'Vader to the darkside.

Six months from now after your G90 shuts down and spews incomprehensible error codes out its LED display, you'll wish you'd stayed
with the industry's best-supported and most reliable chassis instead. And don't forget to change that Dallas chip!

Hey Chris, we wouldn't want to jinx anything would we?? Wink

You know, there are quite a few things that need to be done to the 9500s - anamorphic squeeze mod - LVPS voltage mod. Even when all the "hotfixes" have been done on the focus board, its still highly prone to flashover.

The Dallas chip may be an issue on the G90 but I'm starting to think that replacing it is just something you do when you get one. Just like the things aforementioned that uou have to make sure are done when you get a 8000 upwards. Maybe the fans but that is debatable. If someone did some G90 mods with the video chain, they would certainly sell alot.

Kind regards

Potential problems were one of the reasons I held off for so long on getting a G90. However now that Curt can do repairs...that seems like it may not be a huge driver now...I still have not sold my Vision and am having second thoughts about selling my 9500LC Ultra. Maybe I will put the Vision and the 9500 in storage for a year....If the Sony is still up and running I might reconsider selling...if not then bye, bye..
