The Retro Graphics 801s that I sold to a bar 2 years ago has died. They told me it just turned off. I have checked and there is no glycol leaks. When I try to power it on it will make several attempts at starting then stops. I get no HV crackle or the tube heaters to light. The error light is lit on the controller board. I swapped out both power supplies and no change. The HV shut down red LED is not lit. All of the other LEDs on the side are lit even the red one,but one is blinking slowly.

I do have parts that I can swap from the spare one at the house. If this was an Ampro I would have had it fixed already but these Barcos drive me crazy.

Any ideas as to where to start?

Pull the convergence board and see if it will fire up. If not, you have a bad H or V board, or one of the three electrolytics on the motherboard directly under the main SMPS have shorted.

Love the Barco, learn the Barco, live the BArco.

Oh, the EHT board could be shorted too. Start pulling boards until the SMPS stops pulsing, and you've most likely found your bad board.

Ok Curt,

I pulled every board, one at a time and no change. Sad I started with the convergence tray and ended with the HV power supply. So I guess I am going to have to pull the mother board and change the caps. Mad

Where can I get the caps from?

No, measure across the caps to see if you get a dead short across one of them. If so, clip it out of the circuit and power up. You can leave it out, it's a bitch to put another one in, and the set will work without it.

I think he got that. Although the idea of Captain Jack measuring the cap with a ruller is pretty funny. Very Happy

I got a chance to try and fix this sunday. I tested all of the caps and they were all ok. so I cut out the one with the lowest reading. still no change. The 3rd LED from the left on the top is the one that is pulsating when trying to start. I took out EVERY board and tried to start it and got the same thing. With all the boards out the little green LED on the upper part of the power supply will pulsate.
I then disconnected EVERY connector from it. All the amplifier boards ,convergence coils, fans and the only thing left hooked up was the power supply and controller. It STILL pulsated and would not start. The power supply works fine when I try it in the one at home. I have put the one from the house in it and no change.

Pull out every board incl the EHT board and swap them out with your set. If you get no resolve, then you have a problem on the motherboard (I've had shorts occur between traces on the m/b once in a blue moon and in that case write it off.

Heck, he got 10X the life of a digital even after 2 years, right?

OK, I finally got around to working on this thing again. I pulled the whole projection system out of the cabinet and brought it home. I have been doing a bunch of back and forth board swapping.

And it's.............ALIVE!!! Thumbs Up

I am now in need of a few boards.

Vertical board

Video/RGB switcher board

Quad decoder board

And I screwed up the SMPS. I pulled it before it was completely drained and the back side touched the chassis and ZAP! now it has allot of LEDs not working and pulsing when I try to fire it up with that SMPS

So who has an old 801s kicking around. Very Happy: I know he is not going to want to put a bunch of money into it. But with how far the prices of the 801 series has dropped I figure I should be able to get him going pretty cheap.

I've got everything X 10 in stock, but it's cheaper to repair your boards.

Well the Vertical board will cause the SMPS to cycle trying to start and the Video/RGB board will do the same.
The quad decoder will very, very faintly make the red and blue tubes glow a little. The green tube has an extremely faint image on it. The SMPS has one of the fuses in the center blown. I tried to jump it and power it up but it was a no go.

So how much we looking at to fix the boards.
