When I reset all settings in my sony 1272 to 128 (middle-of-the-road) and then look at the red and green vertical lines on the test pattern, the red is always out of whack with the green.

Is this normal? Should I have to make a bunch of skew adjustment on the red to get it in line with the green?

The blue seems to be ok.

You can loosen up and rotate the deflection yokes(closest to the bell of the tube- the second set is the one doing the skew corrections) on the tubes to correct this problem. Start with a factory reset, make sure that the green is level in the first place, then line up blue and red to green. BE careful of course as there is high voltage at the deflection yoke connectors.

Thanks. I figured thats what needed to be done, but, this is the second 1272 that has the same type issue.

So, I guess this is just the way Sony made their 1272's.

Any ideas or opinions why they would do this?

My guess is that just like any other mass produced item there is some allowed tolerance in the assembly of the projectors. Each machine's factory presets are set to compensate for the tolerance, since it's I would imagine much easier to fine tune such things in the presets. Also, just as the age of the electronics causes convergence drift in our setups over time, the actual resulting image from the factory presets drifts. The combination of the two can produce some drastic results on screen.

I may be wrong, but that's my best guess...

Hey, sounds reasonable to me. I am going to get the 1270 back on the table and see if it is the same way.

Because they are magnets the settings can change dramatically when the PJ has been moved
The location can play a big part (northern or southern hemisphere )
And yes the Sony techs were probably rough as guts and who knows who else has played with the settings since it left the factory
