I am having trouble syncing my current DVI input to my newly purchased HD-DVD player so I need to rethink my options
Option 1:
Moome card $350
HD-DVD player $350
Blue-Ray: $500

Total: $1,200
Option 2:
PC that has cable card option: $800
Cable card is extra
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive: $400

Total: $1,200
PC has a higher hassle factor, but I could also play with the cable card option a bit.[/url]

Where can you get a dual format drive for PC, or is that a typo.
I think many people would go with the standalone players and the moome for simplicity

One is coming on Oct 7th. the $400 is an estimate, I think some are expecting $300.

I don't seem to find the thread. Who makes the dual-format drive? Know where it's available? Myself, I don't care about burn capability.

htpc for me... Gamma control, software selection,media server, digital and coax audio out, lots of HDD for instant access,can be used for automation(lights curtains etc..) you can Tivo your favorites and skip the ads
I have been waiting for a dual drive to show up... looks like I have some shopping to do now

Which player s/w will be used with this? Doe TT support HD DVD and or BD? I know the pDVD will support BD (well, the version I have does).

Looks like the $399 version will write Blu-Ray discs, the $299 one doesn't. I don't know how important that will be to me so I will hold off for a bit.

Ok - $600 for a PS3 that only plays Blu-Ray, $300 (or $400 if you want Blu-Ray writing capability) for an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo. Seems like a simple answer to me (and it's not the PS3).

You're forgetting the HTPC and all the associated hassle that go with it. If you already have an HTPC and know how to make one behave, then your additional cost is only $300-400. But for those of us who never drank the HTPC koolaid, a PS3 (which you can easily find for $400 used, or as low as $430 new) makes a lot more sense than $400 for a drive that I have to build an HTPC around.

I was intending to use it in conjunction with the TVONE C2-260 scaler card, which acts more like a normal scaler than an HTPC. The C2-260 uses the PC only as a power source and connects to the PC's display via its VGA output.

I have to agree with Gary. I used to be a huge HTPC proponent, but that was back when good scalers cost $5-10K.
Today, I think the average person would have to be crazy to mess with putting together an HTPC to "try" and play back HD-DVD and BluRay when HD-DVD players are available for $200-300 (new) and Blu-Ray players are available for $500 or so (new).
I added a PS3 and turned off my HTPC. It hasn't been turned on for over 2 months now. There's no reason for it.

An HTPC is an integrated appliance that serves multiple functions, no? I mean, no one that I know looks to build an HTPC just to playback DVDs, or just to play back HD DVD, or just Blu-ray movies, or just for ATSC OTA reception, etc., and none of the standalone products allow anything beyond just their specific function.
Thus, and HTPC that can playback ATSC, CableCard, HD DVD and Blu-ray while at the same time offer scaling and refresh rates uncommon to dedicated application-specific devices has appeal to some. Now add the ability to cache and store to a hard drive array and the benefits to some are quite obvious provided you are accepting of any quirks that come along.
Can you imagine how boring cars would be if radios were not something one could integrate into them? How about a house with internal sh!tter (instead of outhouses?
