I just got my "new" Sony D50 hung and running, and even though it isn't an 8 or 9 inch set, it is WAY better than my old 1020q! Anyway, it starts up with a full white screen for warm up purposes, and stays that way for 20 minutes. I know you can bail out of it , or set the warm up time for a shorter duration, but am curious if I need to warm it up every time I use it, or is this mode just for setup and calibration?

Most guys are like me and agree there's no reason to waste the phosphor on 20-minute warm-up screens. Basically, it's like blasting your audio amp full wide-open to get it warm as fast as possible. It had a purpose in commercial AV installs, but for us home users, few actually use it. In fact, most people go into the service menu and turn it off altogether.
Just turn the projector on and start watching.
