|

Hello all,
I am upgrading a system for someone. He currently has a Sony Multiscan VPH G90. He has 2 input boards on it, each supporting RGBHV and Y,Pb,Pr.
Yesterday I installed a new Denon AVR-3808. The sources (DVD and Motorola Comcast STB) are both going into the Denon via Component. With some guidance from Curt via cell phone (I am a CRT noob), I got a working signal after switching from RGBHV to Y, Pb, Pr.
I just placed an order for the HD Fury kit with the 5 BNC breakout cable, as the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.
Does anyone see any potential problems or have any suggestions/best practices? If I have missed a post that answers this question, please forgive me and paste the link.
Thanks all!

Thanks for the reply Will!
I checked out those threads, but I'm seeing one key difference here; and that is that they were all using HDMI from the sources to the AVR (hopefully I didn't overlook something). I'm just using Component from the DVD (standard def) and the Cable set top box (Comcast maxes out at 1080i).
I've already seen the hell of going all HDMI using an AVR. It's weird; some of my clients had no problems passing the HDMI pairity bit, yet others got the blue screen error, even from the same cable provider (Comcast).
IMO, Denon has done a fantastic job of trying to make everything as HDMI friendly as possible. This project I'm working on now is new territory however, so I'm anxious to try out the HD Fury. I'm anticipating success, if people have only struggled with going 100% HDMI. Things could get interesting if he decides to buy a Blue Ray player though...

Hey John,
Unfortunately it is not limited to HDMI sources. As I understand the problem, it has something to do with the combination of the AVR series not properly recognizing DVI devices for HDCP, and the HDFury having a slightly malformed EDID.
I've tried the following through my 3808 (resolution 1080i for all sources):
Toshiba A20 via HDMI - did not work
Toshiba XA2 via HDMI - did not work
Scientific ATL 3250HD via DVI (to HDMI) - did not work
Scientific ATL 3250HD via Component - did not work
Samsung DVD-HD850 (HDCP unlocked) via HDMI - worked!
Samsung DVD-HD850 (HDCP unlocked) via Component - did not work
What I've inferred from the above is that when the AVR is wanton of HDCP, it generates its own. It then looks to the output device to see if it can pass HDCP. In the case of the Fury, there is some bit of nonsense in the EDID which is malformed, and this coupled with the Denon's incorrect handling of the DVI spec causes the problem. Note the HDMI link above with HDCP defeated (note that the DVD player here is actually TELLING the Denon to turn off HDCP) does work. It doesn't depend on the "source of the source," so to speak. And also interesting is the fact that even at 480i or 480p, nothing passes through with HDCP. Frustrating. T-minus 12 hours until the DVI detective arrives.
From what I've read and if I am at all understanding this problem correctly, this should (SHOULD!!) clear things up, because:
1.) The Source is requesting an HDCP key which request is repeated by the Denon
2.) The HDFury has valid HDCP keys and is able to transmit those back upstream EXCEPT
3.) Either/or/both The Denon does not recognize HDCP enabled DVI devices correctly/the Fury's EDID is goofed.
4.) In the absence of the source requesting the key, the Denon will do so if it is either displaying high-def content or UPCONVERTING to high-def content or displaying transcoded content from component/(presumably video or s-video as well)
so... if I give the Denon a display device with a correctly formed EDID, then the Fury passes its legit keys... well, I pray that it works like I think.
I will definitely let you know.
Have a good night!
Will

Well, got the DVI Detective today. Long story short - it doesn't work.
Why? The DVI detective does not pass HDCP. I have no idea how oliverq got his to work.
So my next idea is to reprogram the HDFury's EDID... I am going to pick up a DVI-outputting video card and see what I can figure out.
Boy, it would sure be nice if the HKMod people would actually respond to the posts asking for help.

Good info will; thanks for that. Sorry about the end result though
I guess I'll find out when the Fury gets here. I've got seasoned help scheduled to come down and steer the boat on this install, so that should increase my chances of success.
I'll report back.
btw...please let me know as things progress for you
