Not to sure what just happened, but, I went to the local BB to see there were any hd-dvd players on sale. Toshiba A20 is on sale for $300.00. But, when I asked if they had any, they said nope, sold out.

So, there was this XA2 sitting there on the shelf. No tag on the shelf, no advertisement, nothing. I asked, how much is this? The guy looks it up and says, $499.99. I said, you sure? Yep! Not refurbished, not renewed; unopened!

Ok, I'll take one to go please! I even got to use a coupon. Walk out the door for a total of: $514.00 (or something like that).

Cool

Might I suggest others try their BB for the same deal?

This deal has been around for a while on BB's website but not in stores. Until now.

Just as I figured. Here I thought I found a good deal, and like usual "I'm a day late and a dollar short".

Oh well, I hope it was a good deal.

So...

I bought my BB's last A20 on Thursday evening, knowing that they were running the additional two free HD-DVD offer starting yesterday, but well, I wanted to get A player before they all vanished for a couple weeks...

Looked great!

Watched a total of 3 movies on it, then a buddy stopped over yesterday afternoon to check it out. Pop in a disc that i've already watched, and watch the player hang there just saying "Welcome" on its display...

can't get disc out
can't get to power off
yank cord, wait... replace...
same thing.

cursing now... take unit apart to get disc out. "huh, it's just a regular PC drive!"

FINALLY get disc out after taking top and front panel off... rolling drive gear by hand.

put back together, try one more time, nope. Box up, drive to Best Buy...

walk through home theater - one lone XA2 sitting there.

Go to customer service (AGAIN) - tell story. complain mightily. Ask what they can do on ONLY remaining HD-DVD player in the store, talk to 3 different people, finally manager agrees to knock $100. I should have asked for more - they really seemed to be eating from my hand at that point, but I was sold.

So to recap:
HD-XA2 + 7 free movies = $399.99 + huge PITA. I like it!

Hhhmmmm.. Well, that's the good thing about buying from BB; 30 days to return. But from what I have seen watching sd-dvds, the xa2 is very nice!!

Now, I just need some hd-dvds and a marquee 8500, or new tubes for the sony 1272.

I tend to buy stuff in the wrong order. Rolling Eyes

Doesn't seem like it will have the Reon scaler though.

I was putting off buying a hd dvd player until the these third generation players came out, but I'm really needing something with a good SD DVD scalar. One big/small (depends) problem that I have heard about the XA2 is it judders or skips frames on certain hd movies. Would there be any reason to go ahead and purchase a current hd dvd player as to waiting for these new ones? Not that it would really matter, but I was wanting to try and get all the latest gadgets and whistles on the player so I wouldn't have to upgrade later. I know its a lot of marketing crap but would there be any point on holding out for a player that provided the deep color, high def audio, hdmi 1.3, etc?
