|
|
Just for fun, I scanned through Netflix's HD DVD and Blu Ray titles and counted up for:
1 - What I'd like to watch on each format
2 - What I'd like to own on each format
3 - How many of these titles were on both formats
The results are:
Blu Ray 108 titles I'd like to watch, 23 I'd really like to own
HD DVD 140 titles I'd like to watch, 28 I'd really like to own
36 titles I'd like to watch are on both Blu Ray and HD DVD
12 titles I'd really like to own that are on both formats.
This confirms my even less scienfic scan of HD DVD & Blu Ray titles at Best Buy. HD DVD won there also. So, I guess I should buy a HD DVD first.
YMMV

I don't know. I didn't dig in that deep. It was just a quick, dirty, nonscienfic thing to satisfy my curiosity. I didn't even think about that going though the lists. Though the Paramount / Dreamworks deal is just another plus in the HD DVD column. There may be even more HD DVD and Blu Ray titles that Netflix doesn't carry. Which could change the #s a little. Though at $30 - $40 a pop new, I will not be buying many hi def DVDs of either format. Which was one reason I picked Netflix to look at. Of course with HD DVD hardware being cheaper, that's another plus for HD DVD. Looks like I may have just decided what I want Santa to bring me this year.

Honestly, there aren't as many movies I want to watch as I figured there were - on either format.
I found that out last week when I was trying to pick out a good sci-fi or "blow sh*t up" flick for a guys' movie night I had Friday night. The short-list of stuff we wouldn't have all seen (but that my wife wouldn't want to see with me) was pretty short on HD-DVD (what I have at home), so I went over to BD and started looking... nope, not that much over there, either that the guys wouldn't have all seen and would also be cool. We ended up watching Serenity because only one guy had seen it. It was just OK. I think we'll watch 300 next time, even though some have already seen it. Maybe Chronicles of Riddick after that.
Both camps really needs to start kicking out some more GOOD movies. Both the hot new releases, and the some good classic stuff that will work great in HD with advanced audio. There are some real crap movies that both camps have kicked out the door. Why the studios do that is beyond me.
Still, I know from looking at the list of movies on both, pretty soon I'm going to have break down and get a BD player and go format neutral. When the Pixar stuff starts rolling out on BD, that will probably be my breaking point. Hopefully, I can find a deal on a used player, because I'm not spending $450 on a BD player.

No, I would say it's definitely not Amazon. No deals like that there. Why do think it's Amazon?

I ordered a dozen Blu-Rays yesterday from Amazon. My average cost was $13 each (shipped). 8)
They always run specials... right now, most titles are buy 2 get 1 free. 3 HDDVDs or 3 BDs for <$40.
So I ordered in batches of 3 and got 3 for $39. I have a 10% discount on my account from a special they had last year... buy 3 HDDVD's or BD's and get 10% off all HDDVD or BD purchases for a year. So if you don't have that, expect 10% higher. Shipping is free.
Check out the long list of eligible titles in the "Amazon 3 for 2 title list" thread in the Blu-Ray forum at the A*S site.

Hi Kal,
How do I get deals like that, I just walk in and talk to the owner(it's not a very big place and he only has 2 locations) and say how much today, the first time it was 2 for 1. Maybe it helps that he is Chinese and so is my GF. He doesn't have a great selection but he seems to get most of them in slowly.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough when I said the current 3 for 2 special at Amazon was for a "list of eligible titles". It's not a small list, though. Not too hard to find 3, 6, 9, 12 worth buying at these prices...

There are plenty of titles on AMAZON for 19.95 brand new, tax included. Over $25 , shipping is FREE. I read that you don't get that deal in CANADA though, BUMMER. In fact yesterday I just bought another HD-A2 with 3 FREE HD movies (from a list of 59) from Amazon for $219 shipping included!! Plus I will get 5 more free from Toshiba! Beat that one!! That's 8 movies, and if you figure $15 per movie you're only paying $99 for the player. Evan if there isn't 8 movies that you want from the list, you can just pick the best ones available and sell them. You should be able to get at least $15 bucks each. So, you will still only be paying $99 for the player. If you were waiting for a better time to buy than this......well, GOOD LUCK!!
If anyone can swing me a deal like that for a Blu-Ray, let me know. I'll go format neutral in a heartbeat.
Carry-On
