I have been running this resolution on my Marquee for 2x scaling of DVD's in a 1.78:1 AR

Is this the right way to do it?

My Math is

1.78/1 = 1440/X

1.78X = 1440

X = 808

If you want to split hairs, I think it would be 810, not 808. 1440x(9/16)=810. 16:9 is actually 1.7777... as opposed to 1.78.

That would be the square pixel resolution, and would allow perfect 2x scaling in the horizontal, but not in the vertical. That's why a lot of people go 1440x960, as it's perfect 2x scaling in both directions. Of course, then they're not square pixels, so even though DVD will look great, your desktop will be squished. If your desktop isn't important, though...

I don't run either, because I don't have that nice of a machine.

Thanks SC,

When I run 1440*960p in a 1.78:1 image area and play a DVD the picture is squished

1440*960 is 1.5:1 is there a way to run it in some other AR and still retain the proper AR of the movie

720x480 (DVD) is 1.5:1, too. When expanded to fill a 16:9 area, any anamorphic widescreen disc should look perfect. If it doesn't, your source, or scaler, or whatever is screwing something up. You using HTPC? What player?

I'm using a HTPC so the 1:1 pixel mapping in zoom player is probably what is messing up the picture

The whole point of Zoom Player is you can create a custom aspect ratio to correct it.

But, umm...you still watching DVDs??

I'm not by my computer, but doesnt ZP have something like a "fill" or "full" mode where it just "maximizes" the video and doesn't do any AR correction?
