This question is along the same line as the post from "donr". Is there a way to converge a Sony 1272q using an exterior pattern instead of the crosshatch that is built in the pj? Whenever I go into the test mode, the internal patterns are displayed.

I then end up doing a little convergence via the internal source, switching to external test pattern to see if the adjustment was good, then back to internal and so forth.

Yep... I can't remember for sure at the moment, but I think if you hold down the "test" key again for same 5 or 6 seconds AFTER you're in service man mode, and in zone convergence mode, it will then display the external source. It's a little tricky - you need the manual so you know which zone you're adjusting because you don't get the visual feedback of the flashing square to tell you visually which zone you're adjusting. You just get a "zone 5" message or whatever.

I looked over the manuals, but could not find anything that says it can be done.

Yes, that is correct, though I'm a little hazy on the details since I haven't run a 1272 for a while.

But, yes, you toggle with the TEST button.

Also, the internal registration block (memory block) used will be the one that conforms to the input horizontal frequency, not the default registration block 4 (unless the external frequency happens to match).

There is a reference to all of this near the back of the manual, but yes, it is somewhat obscure.

Edit: I just spent the last 30 minutes looking through the manuals and I can't find it - but I'll bet SonyNut knows.

You press the test button to toggle between the different test patterns. The last one is your source picture. When in zone and exterior source, the rectangle for the area you are working in flashes on the screen for a second so you at least know where you are.

Actually, holding down TEST for 5 secs or so while in any convergence mode will display the source pattern. Then you just adjust just as you would with the internal patterns. Big difference as said earlier is that while on ZONE adjustment mode, it wont highlight the area you are adjusting. You either have to look at the manual to see what area you are adjusting or remember all 21 points.

Well, I'll just be damned!! Being able to do convergence on an external source is the best thing since sliced bread! Although IMHO, I did a pretty good job using internal so far. Problem was that it took hours to do; switching back and forth, back and forth, back and forth...
