|
|
Is there a market today for old Faroudja processors? I'm asking on behalf of a friend who has a lot of Faroudja VP 400 processors.
Faroudja VP 400A (x6)
Faroudja VP 400U (x1)
Faroudja VP 400 (x4)
Are these processors desired by anyone today? I'm curious

Honestly, no. You would be lucky to get $50 for each. Yes they were huge money in the 1990s but many free video processors that are newer are going to be miles better with more input and output options and everyone knows this. I can't think of any early 1990s video processors that are worth anything. Maybe some from the late 1990s might be worth something like a snell and wilcox.

As Virusc mentions there's little to no interest.
These were sold 30 years ago and quadrupled 525 interlaced lines into 1050 progressive only. All TVs and projectors these days have built in scalers that probably already do a better job at scaling to the native resolution of the display (probably not 1050p). The only displays that don't that would benefit from these are CRT projectors, mostly 8-9" models that would properly resolve 1050p. And then this is only useful with an SD (480-525i) signal. So the use-case is tiny to begin with as well.
I would be surprised if there was interest with someone giving them away for free, but you never know.
Kal

This may be the guy that posted pictures of a ton of CRT projectors in the Facebook group.
For anyone that thinks that CRT have any value today, they are kidding themselves.
Last year someone sold a Sony G90 that I'd sold him 10+ years ago, but never used it, for $350 US or so on on eBay. I likely sold it for $3500 or more, depending on if I put in a new green tube. It was a low hour set though from what I can remember.
The only people that have any passing interest now are gamers, that want a big picture, with no lag. There's still one or two die-hards that are running CRT projectors, but there's a reason I got out of the industry 8+ years ago.. no interest, a high failure rate due to aging parts, and no money in it.
As Kal said, the Faroudjas (and most of his other stock, if it's the same guy) should be listed as freebies at this point.
