A lot this guy's videos are really good. He did, like, a 5 part series on CED.

Interesting video but he's about 20+ years too late. Wink

Some of the things he mentions are also a bit misleading... like the idea that the resolution on CRT is theoretically unlimited. I understand he says that because it uses phosphor and not fixed pixels, but that's only part of the story. You still need control circuitry and that circuitry is very limited. It's all part of the equation. You could argue too that resolution isn't unlimited on CTR as it's limited by the phosphor grain size. Same idea as with film when people say film has an unlimited resolution. Not true. There's grain and grain has a size.

Colour rendering on CRT is indeed "fantastic" as he states but only as long as you stick to Rec.601/Rec.709. Don't even think about HDR/Rec.2020.

If this is the best image he's ever seen as he states, it means he's never seen a good digital projector - one that is set up correctly.

I like CRT and still have a warm spot in my heart for it. It worked great and was miles better than anything available at the time when we all go into it. But that ship sailed ~15-20 years ago when (IMHO) digital surpassed CRT in just about every facet. CRT projectors were available dirt cheap used so people (myself included) continued to use them, but if you looked at the actual new price of both, digital was 1/3-1/4 the cost and better. People do like to talk about black levels, but my current digital (JVC NZ7 laser) has black levels identical to my last CRT (a high end Barco Cine 8 Onyx) once the gamma curve was correctly adjusted.

IMHO, the only advantage that a CRT projector has today is that you may be able to find one for free. If something goes on it however, it's usually trash as boards/arts are no longer available. The other unfortunate part is that they're going old enough to no longer be very reliable.
