I have some question about my D50 in my vintage room.
1. Any suggestion what screen material would be good choice for a DIY non-AT screen? I have a Seymour AT center stage UF in my main system and looking at their Glacier White PS but any other suggestions?
2. I got a Kramer VP-719DS with the projector. Is this good enough for SD source (vhs, laserdisc, dvd) or any suggestion for a better video processor?
3. What contrast level is "safe" for the tubes for a pro-long lifespan?
4. Would a mooncard make any big difference with SD source and if so, can I still get one?
5. Would a G90 make any difference other than more lumens comparing to the D50 when the source is just SD (vhs, LD, DVD)?

Paint one yourself for the ultimate DIY. Curtain blackout material is popular. I did this myself almost 25 years ago and I'm still using it even though it was meant to be temporary while I saved up to buy a "professional" Stewart screen. Judging against the Stewart samples I have it's somewhere around 1.1 - 1.2 gain and looks fantastic. I trimmed the edges in velveteen. Hard question to answer. What are you using the video processor for? What are your needs? What resolution/refresh rate do you like to use? A D50 is fairly soft. You could probably even drive it directly at 480i and scanlines may not be too objectionable depending on your screen size? Properly set up 480p is probably the minimum. 1080i is probably the sweet spot.

No such thing with any CRT projector. The harder you drive the tubes the faster they'll wear. Given that CRT projectors aren't worth anything I'd just go for it. As well, light output with contrast set to X on one D50 won't give the same light output as contrast set to Y on a different D50 because it depends on tube age, how it's set up, bias/drive settings, etc.

For SD only use? I don't think I'd bother. HD, yes. A Sony D50 running at 1080i through an HDMI card directly from some source set to 1080i looks pretty good (no video processor/scaler required).

For SD only use the difference won't be as noticeable but there will be a difference as the G90 is LC and has other better features. The G90 is much bigger and louder if that matters. For SD only use it would seem kinda crazy unless you find a G90 close to free. But this is true of any CRT projector. Other than FH video selling NOS G90s on eBay ( https://ebay.us/O2Vguy ) you're not going to find CRT projectors other than used, so you're at the whim of what's out there. Keep in mind that they're all mostly 20+ years old now so keeping them running is going to get more difficult.
