I decided to try an experiment on my Sony VPH-G90 to see if passive 3D is feasible. I only own one Sony G90 so this is not a full test. However I am still able to test if polarized 3D could work on a CRT. These are the results.

Disclaimer:
-The Sony VPH-G90 is not calibrated and has roughly 1900 hours on the tubes, with original green C-Element
-Contrast is set to 80, Brightness is set to 50
-Silver screen is a 100 inch 1.9 gain screen with an HGA of 30 degrees
-Colorimeter is an i1 Display Pro using Calman Home
-Window Size is set to 50%, Gamma set to 2.2
-I am not a professional calibrator, I am not an expert.

Circular polarizer filters were attached in front of the projector lenses. These are cheap $10 filters. I turned the projector on, made a quick alignment, and then tested the 3D glasses. The left lens was bright and the right lens was dim. The lack of discoloration confirmed the filters worked properly. For some unknown reason the right eye filter works with the left lens of the glasses.

I set the i1 Display Pro on a tripod with 3D glasses and proceeded to take measurements. Upon taking re-measurements and repositioning the meter I consistently got around 33 nits (9.6 foot-lamberts). The brightness measurement appears to be representative of what I was seeing.

I then put on Avatar Way of Water. Looking through the left lens I saw a pleasant and bright picture. The overall image reminded me of IMAX Laser (11 foot-lamberts).

Final thoughts, I think the image looks great. It's probably not worth pursuing in 2024. Regardless, it’s satisfying to know that passive 3D on CRT is possible. Please let me know any thoughts on this.

Please judge photos with a grain of salt.
