Hi all, new to the world of CRT projectors and found this forum. I picked up a free Sony projector, guy used it for years then it stopped turning on. when you turn it on it powers up for 1 second fans come on, can hear some degauzz? that whoosh sound then it goes right back to standyby mode. tried searching here to no avail. where to begin? its in nice shape. photos attached. capacitors look good, no bulging. i have plenty of pics, wont let me post them here. really wanted this for use with my laserdisc collection.

Maybe a High Voltage issue if it shuts down just as you hear the High Voltage some up. See that block with the red wires running into it in 3791 at the top of the screen? That's the high voltage section.
Turn off the lights, hit the power and see if there are any sparks flying from any of those wires to the chassis.
ALso do all three tubes glow at the back ( skinny neck end opposite the lenses)? There should be a faint orange glow there.

the only tube that give a glimmer of glow is the green. nothing else. the CRTs look a little rough to me after taking off the lenses to look at them

Jeff Slife has a working G70 he wants to get rid of and he can't be more than a few hours drive from you. I'd upgrade.

hey, yeah I got one for free if you come and take it out of my basement. I have a cart to get it in the vehicle. Also i sold the other one to my friend,
he said the same as me. Both work. He lives north of me. Both of us are just a few miles off of 75. He moved and didnt have room for it so he went digital.
You cant beat free.
If youre not interested just say so there is some parts i could sell.
We would both like to see them put to use. Rather than sold off in pieces for a few bucks.
Welcome to the forum.
Goodness abounds.

A shutdown on the 10XX series could be an imploded tube. If the HV is arcing within the tube due to loss of vacuum, then the set will sense that, and shut down. ON the older 1031/1030/1020 I had lots of problems with the power supplies dying. Or, a fault in either deflection circuit (H/V) can trigger the power supply to shut down.

Hey Curt!
I'm just like, that projector is soooooo old and soooooo lacking in features. When there are two fully functional G70's within driving range....
jeffputts, G70 is a for real, good projector, with all the 'modern' bells and whistles. It has more light, much better focus, will last longer, and has a true Rec709 color gamut to make ALL the colors in Rec709.
Go grab them while they are hot.

My friend changed his mind and decided to keep his. In case he moves again I presume. Mine is still available though.
For now.
