This guy really knows how to teach! He breaks it down and makes it make sense. Also builds a video card in the process. Worth the watch!

Hey Analog, thanks! Been looking for something like this for a while. Had the crazy idea to add VGA to a CRT telly for some time, an design my own circuitry around the CRT (so it could work with resolutions like 320x200 and 720x400). In the end it was too much hassle to be bothered, might as well wait until a (rare these days) PC monitor pops up somewhere for a few quid.
I still have the idea to hook up an old Tektronix oscilloscope CRT to a MS-DOS box some day. It has ES deflection, no coils to drive. Maybe play some Asteroids on it. With its green slowly decaying phosphor, that should give a fun effect. Resolving resolution will probably be an issue, though, judging from its datasheet. Oh well. Plenty of other projects to finish first.

Wish I could just "like" this post, but instead I'll have to revive this ancient thread.

Thanks for posting! Super informative and I've been wondering about how VGA works.
