Stuff wasn't cheap! Keep in mind that minimum wage was around $3/hr.

I remember paying over $700-800 CAD in 1985 for a Harman Kardon TD302 Cassette Deck. Worked all summer painting to pay for it. I was 16.

Nice! Video got better, audio construction quality got worse over time, save for the audiophile stuff. Remember that all the lower end stuff ended up putting in LED lights on everything... 5-7 band eqs with fluorescent displays were the norm. Looks like that shop stuck to the higher end stuff... save for the Sanyo Walkman. Smile\

I bought an Akai GX630 reel to reel in grade 11 (1980) for $1000 CDN, money gained by fixing and selling CRT TVs. I still have it, haven't used it in a decade, but guaranteed it will fire up fine.

US inflation since 1983 was 2.5x -- so e.g. that $1300 Beta deck would be $3250 in today's dollars with that same inflation rate.

But this is an ad for Canada which means the true costs were only 30% of that figure. Mr. Green

Wink

I looked it up: On August 12 1983 (the date of the ad) $1 CAD was $0.8090 USD.

So that $2499 CAD Sony CRT projector would have cost you $2022 USD.

I wonder what kids nowadays would be willing to work all Summer for? My first year out of a college and I spent nearly every dime I made on two things: paying off my college loan and a Pioneer CLD-99 LD player. Just put it in my rack yesterday;-)
