|
|
I just picked up another Marquee for very cheap, and it has some things in it that made it well worth the price.
It has "new glass" VDC rebuilt tubes in it, and they look pretty good, with good sharpness, and judging by the clear bell glass,
they are indeed very low hours tubes and the projector shows as having under 700 hours on it. I presume the meter was reset when the unit was retubed in 2004, I have the bill of sale for when it was sold in a package deal back then. It was sold with a screen and a Faroudja NRS scaler, for a total price tag in the 19,000 dollar range. Includes GT17 lenses, MP modded neck cards, a rare MP modded 03P VIM, and both red and green C elements to top it all off.
And painted in the ugliest shade of brown I've ever seen. That's gotta go.
But my question is, didn't the VDC new glass rebuilds have a reputation for developing wear patterns rather quickly?
I'm asking because I want to know if I can trust these tubes well enough to offer them for sale. This unit is getting the full Ultra upgrade treatment and that includes installing LUG tubes, most likely.

They had to be driven in first. I had some of them, and it was a procedure with different full screen test patterns at various intensities. It took 100hrs.
The uptick was that they were very cheap compared to original crts. I developed none wear with mine, but the longest experience I had with them was 2000hrs.

the 9" tubes were OK, but the 8" and NEC tubes had lots of phosphor issues. I finally stopped buying them and switched to new for $100 more per tube at teh time.

This brings up a question I have with the purchase of new tubes. Will I have to condition the new tubes with a white field prior to use?

the ones with issues had a Redish-brown aquadag coating in the bell, easy to spot. VDC quit making them a very long time ago and they have little or nothing in common with new glass rebuilds AFAIK

Guys
The very first Novatron rebuilds were a disaster; they hacked their own electron guns together and the focus just SUCKED. Then they got access to Panasonic guns and things were better. Unfortunately some used guns got built into some of the tubes, and G2s were all over the place.

These actually do have the red-brown aquadag inside them.
Evidence by the projector's hours meter is that they have under 700 hours on them.
I checked and they're sharp, they have good focus, and the G2 levels are in the usual range.
